A friend of mine is curious to know how she can be adopted by her step-parent. Although she is 18 & considered an adult legally I have heard that she could still be adopted before she turns 19 and that lawyer would be able sort out the paperwork. Is this truly possible?

Yes, she can be adopted before or after she turns 19. She can be adopted at age 83 if she really wants to be. : ) She and her future parents need to go to a lawyer. They need to explain to the lawyer why they want to adopt her, and why she wants to be adopted by them. They will prepare the paperwork and file for a court date. On that day they will go to court and they will be sworn in. The judge will ask a few questions about why they want to adopt her and why she wants to be adopted by them. They want to make certain there is no coercion on anyone's part or any intention to use this for some bad purpose. After they give their brief testimony, the judge will rule the adoption legal and they are a family forever. : ) |

Most areas that I know of have "adult adoption laws". She could be adopted at 45 if she wanted to be and someone would consent to adopting her. Best to check on the laws in your local area and then speak with a lawyer about how to do it right. |
