How do I explain adoption to my neice?

She is 9 years old. She says that when she grows up, she wants to adopt like Aunt Gaia so that her 'gina won't hurt. While this is adorable, my bff (her mom) and I are both thinking I might need to have a chat with her. Any suggestions?

I'm so terrible with age...she's 8, not 9. Sorry, M!!!

Before our children were placed with us we had to explain adoption to my two God daughters. They were 4 and 7 at the time. We began by reassuring them that their mommy (my bf) would always be their mommy and that this situation did not apply to them so they would not panic at the prospect of losing their parents. Then we just explained it to them in age appropriate terms. They totally got it.
When my kids came and they finally met, my son felt at ease with the girls because they understood what happened.

I would just have a casual conversation that while it is great to adopt, having babies is something that lots of ladies do and she might change her mind in the future. She is still pretty young for a serious talk and I am sure her thoughts on things are not nearly mature yet. Just talk about how wonderful it is to have a baby any way one can and that some people just do things different when they want to have children. Both ways are perfectly wonderful

I would be honest with her.

dont, she is a kid, that's how kids think. really what is wrong with this idea? are you going to explain about fertility issues and everything you went through in trying to have a child? she is 9 of course she does not want to have a natural child now, that may change it may not but what's the worst that could happen? she never has a natrual child and instead chooses to open her heard to a child who needs a family.
you dont have to have a talk over everything.

I'd just let it go. She'll figure it all out later, and if she doesn't - then that's when her mother, not you, can talk to her.

This is one reason it may have been better in "the old days" when little kids too little to deal with all the unpleasantness of having babies knew nothing about "the gory details" until they were old enough to have a better understanding of the whole picture.

If someone has to say something I think they ought to just say something simple like, "Mothers adopt babies because they have a lot of love to give a baby - not to avoid any discomfort from having one themselves. If the discomfort were a big deal there wouldn't be all the mothers in the world that there are."

You should just tell her a mythical story until she gets older like my mom did to me: Adoption is when kids magically appear. Nobody wants a strange kid like that so kind people take them so Gina the Elf doesn't have to hurt the children by sending them away.
Tell her the truth when she is older.

my sisters son is 4 and doesn't really get why I am adopting and askes allot of why's so I just sat him down and told him my belly was broken so someone very thought full was going to let their kid come and live with us...lol kids are so cute. I love to see how their little minds work around things. After that he was like cool.
