I am a 24 year old female that was born on July 22, 1984 at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC.The birth certificate only has by adopted mom's name on it. I would like to know the steps that I should take to look for my birth parents and sister.

I am assuming that your adoption was a 'closed adoption' based on your age. The birth certificate you are looking at is your Amended Birth Certificate...this is the false birth certificate that replaced the true record of your birth....the Original Birth Certificate, which should have the name of your natural mother on it. If I were you I would speak to my adoptive parents, to see what they know...especially by whom your adoption was handled..by an adoption agency or thru an adoption lawyer. If an adoption agency..then you can request your non-identifying information from the agency. I would then suggest joining an on-line support group for adopted people only...they can help you a great deal with ways to search (plus adoptee issues, and issues concerning search & reunion) and possibly hook you up with a 'search angel'.

Are you certain that what you have is a birth certificate or could it be something like a hospital or baptismal certificate?
Birth mother's name must be on a birth certificate for it to be acceptable to authorities.
Check with Dept. or Bureau of Vital Statistics, etc. at municipal offces.
There are places on line to list your info and ask for replies from family, but I can't remember them. Maybe Google "birth mother" or"adoption information".
There are companies that do this. They can be expensive, but I understand that charges are minimal if they don't fnd the person you seek. |
