How do I find out whether or not the son I gave up for adoption is finalized?

Almost a year ago, I signed papers relinquishing my rights to my son for adoption. I got them notarized by the court, except for one form which required the father's signature that they refused to sign. However, they told me that if I could get another notary to sign it for me, that it would be fine. I had a personal friend who is a notary sign it for me; but not in the presence of a judge/courtroom/any other legal witness. She signed it for me in my livingroom. The papers I signed were filed by the couple who has my son. Not once did I ever appear in front of a Judge, lawyer, was never in any courtroom or in front of any other legal authority. I never recieved any document verifying whether or not the adoption was ever even finalized. I have no proof that my son is legally adopted by this couple. I want to know if the adoption hasn't been finalized, do I still have the right to keep my son? How can I find out whether or not it has even been finalized? The couple who has my son will not cooperate with me and has all of my son's personal information. Is there a chance that some fraudulant activity has occured? The father didn't know about the pregnancy nor birth, and never consented to the adoption. He knows now and wants to gain custody of him. However, I'm trying to find out first if I, first of all, still have any rights, so I can make this easier on him. Someone please help me as much as you can.
