I am hoping to adopt my five year old cousin. I am twenty years old, I will be waiting a few years before I do so...but I'd like to get kinship, because if I go through adoption, he could possibly be sent to live in a foster home and I really do not want that. I am wondering if anyone knows how to get kinship legally in Wisconsin?!

Well, I am planning on waiting a couple of years...his mother (and father who is not in the picture at all ) both would willingly give up their parental rights to me. She has five children (many family problems when she was younger) and my five year old cousin has fragile x syndrome which is mild mental retardation...so we both feel that he would be better living with someone who has the time to be able to care of him and to promote the behaviors that he needs. We have a very close bond...since he was born, I have taken him at least one weekend each month, and every single summer since he turned two I have been taking him all summer. I am a very responsible twenty year old, but I plan on waiting a couple years until I am more financially stable.

Kinship care is permitted in wisconsin. To get any kinship care money the child needs to be removed from their parents by CPS and be in need of foster care and they will try to find a family member to take the child before foster care. The most important thing is to have a bond or relationship with the child before hand. And with out knowing all the details its hard to say. If the family is involved with CPS already then talk with them. If not then a lawyer would be the best route. And are the parents in favor of you or someone else raising their child? |

Actually, if CPS takes your cousin, they ALWAYS look for other family members to do kinship care before putting the child into regular foster homes.
Is the situation such that CPS is already involved?
If yes, you need to call the social worker and talk with her asap. Let the worker know you are interested in kinship care. Since you are only 20, this might be a problem....
If CPS is not involved, you will need to get an attorney to help with guardianship issues. |
