How do adoption and fostering differ between the US and the UK?

I know pretty well how it works in the US, but I've read that some people wish our system was more like the system in the UK, which I know nothing about. Just trying to learn as much as I can.

One of the main differences is that there are very few closed adoptions in the UK as open adoptions are now the norm, the level of contact from the birth family will vary depending on what is best for the child. Social Services are also heavily involved in the early stages too.
