I mean you hear of foster parents who do it for the check. I am a foster parent and the money is nice but it no where even begins to cover the cost of raising a child. They even tell you in the training this is not a job you need to do this for the love of the kids because you are being reimbursed not paid and not reimbursed what it cost. You are supposed to have enough to take care of the child without the check.
We get 20.00 a day and 21.50 a month for clothing allowance. Are you kidding me? 21.50 that is not even an outfit for a growing child. Forget a coat if you are in a cold climate. Formula alone is 10.00 a day for two cans of concentrate. Those sick sick foster parents who foster for the money must not give the children anything. How can you do that that to kids? The most Innocent of all humans!
Ok off my soap box
Comments please

Numerically, I don't know how some people do it. About the only thing I can surmise is that they go for quantity. I know a number of foster parents who have multiple children and the children are all well cared for and looked after. At the same time though, I know of at least one foster family that has 3 children who always seem to be lacking. There is a new big screen in the house though and all the "toys" one could want. It's always been my suspicion that the majority of the $3000+ they get for the children each month is not making it's way to the kids. Just proves that there are unethical people in every field.
Friends of mine are just finalizing the adoption of a lovely 6 year old who had been identified while in foster care as having learning delays. Since she has been placed with my friends she has excelled in school and nobody can understand why she was labeled as delayed. My friends, having seen the foster home she was in, suspect that it was just the foster's way of getting more money for her. Regardless of that suspicion, the important part is that she is doing wonderfully with her "forever family" and hopefully things will only continue to get better. |

Um, yes, it does happen. I lived in homes where they fostered for the money. Basically I had no new clothes, sneakers, or toys. If I ever needed anything, I "had to wait for the check." And that still did not mean I would get it.
And there were always 2-3 other foster kids in the house..adding to the money.
And some limited the amount of food....locking refrigerators, or cabinets. Punishing me when I tried to get other food. Totally ridiculous for a growing kid.
Some houses that I lived in, I did not get a birthday anything. And some Christmas's, I got nothing as well. The foster parents used the money for themselves or well told me I was bad.
It is very easy to do. I had a pair of sneakers that ripped the back of my heal and it bled all the time. I was not allowed to get another pair, even though I am sure there was supposed to be SOME money for that kind of thing. The foster parent's kept it for their cigarettes or beer.
Are you kidding me? It happens more than you think.... |

I had a foster family who also had 4 of their own children. Each of these children had their own room, even the 2 who were off to college. The foster kids (there were 3 of us) were all put in one room (attic) that didn't have heat. Finally, they gave us an electic heater and then would come in and turn it off, saying we waste electricity, although the attic was so drafty and I would take a shower and sit in the bathroom as long as possible trying to get as warm and dry as possible before going back upstairs where it was so cold, we could see our breath. When I told them they only took care of us for the money, I came home from school the next day and all of my belongings were shoved in a garbage bag next to the door and my social worker was there to take me to a "group home". At least it was warm there. |

Those that do it for the money basically foster as many kids as they can and provide them with very little. many times, not even the basics.
One of my son's previous foster parents fostered 5 other children. When he came back to live with us, he did not have anything additional from what we sent him with. No new clothing or toys.He was even made to leave some of his toys there when he left even though he had them when he came or they were gifts received while there.... I take that back, he did have about two or three bibles that he said was the only thing he was allowed to read.
I have heard of others that go as far as to make the older children work and pay room & board.
thankfully, there are good foster parents out there that really care about the children. |

In my state we get just under $30/day for older children which would be plenty to pay for food, clothing, and toys.
My problem is that where I live they say one of us should be home with the children at all times and be available to drive to counseling and family meetings. My husband and I both work. Our children are in after school care for two hours each day. The caseworker told us she thinks I should stay home. That's something we can't afford to do. I won't quit my job and then try to make sure I have 2-3 foster children at all times to help pay the mortgage. |

Frankly, I don't know how people who do it JUST for the money can sleep at night. My husband and I talked about doing it, and if we did, we wouldn't want to use ANY of the state's money. We want to save it, if we could, for the kid to have. I'm adopted myself. When I hear about people taking those kids just for the money, I get so angry. |

We get no clothing allowance and only 8.00 per day with a child in diapers. I do know that some do it for the money - but it surely can't be in this state. We do it for the children! We have a lot of friends who have children who are older than ours and thank God they are not opposed to give us their hand me downs for such things as coats / snow pants and boots! |

in england you get about 100 pounds a week to 300 pounds a week depending on the state of the child and the qualifications of the foster carer you also get more money if you have more than one child. you also get allowances for clothes, birthday presants and stuff like that. im doing the foster carers traing at the moment so im not qualified yet but i am doing this because im so passionate about children deserving a home and someone to love them that i would do it if it payed nothing. i think a good foster carer that gets payed good money should put a little bit of it in the bank for the child so that when they leave they have a bit of security for them selves and independence especially if they are teenagers and are leaving to go to college or getting there own place or something like that. i want to be the best foster carer that there is a learn as much about how to do it well as i can, im doing a coarse at college and im a volunteer for a special needs school and a charity that helps to prevent family breakdown if i get the qualifications to get payed well i will make sure the foster child benefits from that. so from my point of view i think that if im going to dedicate my life to other people what is wrong with getting payed for it so long as the children benefit from it as well as myself. with my qualifications i could get a well payed job in a school or social services or something like that but ive decided to foster its not a career choice it is a life choice |

Okay this totally blows my mind! You must be from the US.
It is totally different in Canada. They actually give a birthday fund, a fund to save up for the child's future (this money is kept and passed on to the next foster home for the child) and a Christmas fund. They give you a school clothes allowance and a winter coat allowance. And they give you enough to pay for the child's food and extracurricular activities, all of which (except for the food part) you need to provide reciepts for. They provide all medical, dental, and mental care for the child. They even reimburse you for your travel if it has to do with medical, visits to natural parents etc.
It amazing the lack of funding in the US for the most vulnerable children. This is disgusting.
You should NOT be able to tell the difference between a foster child and any other child in a class room. If you can, then there is a big problem.
I forgot to add that everything purchased for the child MUST move on with them whether they go to another home or to their family's home to stay. |

where do you people shop? How is that not enough to buy food and clothing? My husband is in the military and we get paid less than that for a family of 3. You don't need to get them designer things. Try store brand it is just as good. My mother in law fosters. She doesn't do it for money. But still makes some money off of it. Not saying she is super rich. And she takes great care of the children. They always have tons of food, clothing, and toys. She even ended up adopting 4 of them.
I guess you just need a lesson in how to stretch a dollar. |

The ones that do are usually using the kids on farms or family businesses.
My parents are fosters and they LOSE money on their kids, but that's OK. They treat them in the same way they treated me and my siblings with rewards for jobs well done (such as behavior or grades). |
