How do you feel about Yard Sale for China Adoption?

How do you feel about Yard Sale for China Adoption?

Today I saw a sign that said "HUGE yardsale this weekend. For China Adoption."

I have never seen anything like that before.

Excuse me while I go vomit.

<wipes mouth>

How do I feel about it? I feel disgusted. Reading most of these answers only adds to my nausea. "Do you know how much it costs to adopt from China?" Um...yeah. So? If you can't afford the adoption and the airfare, how are you going to afford to raise the kid? There are plenty of kids right here in the U.S. who need loving homes. It's called foster care and it doesn't cost anything. If someone really wants to parent a needy child, I think adopting from his or her own country is the best bet.

If I ever see a sign like that, I will definitely stop...but only to give the PAPs a piece of my mind.

This takes away the future child's privacy.
Can you imagine someone saying "oh I bought a shirt for a quarter to help PAY for you little fella!"

Why not have a plain old yard sale????
Did you know the infertiles are getting in on this now, for IVF?
They are asking for donations just like the adopters do!

Maybe we should start fundraising/yard sailing for vasectomies and abortions!?

Cam
I see nothing wrong with selling personal items to raise money. Advertising "adoption" to seek the sympathies of others is quite another thing. I wouldn't do that.

ETA: It's not like a yard sale is going to generate big bucks. For me they are more about unloading unwanted stuff. But if a person needs to raise money for travel expenses or something small like that I see nothing wrong with it as long as it's not advertised "for adoption".

People can sell belongings and use them for anything they wish. That's no big deal. But, as Cam mentioned, the use of "For China Adoption" to play on people's possible sympathies is pretty tacky. No one needs to know what a person plans to do with the earnings from a yard sale.

Why is it okay to advertise for adoption? You never see "Yard sale for wedding"

Adoption should not be a new tent for the Boy Scouts.

If you are advocating a 'better life', you ought to be able to provide it.

Imagine 15 years down the road:

"YARD SALE: Send my Chinese adoptee to college!"

I think it's ok.

For those of you on here who say that you shouldn't be able to adopt if you have to have a yard sale to raise money...are you aware that an adoption from China can cost $30,000?? How many of you have that much lying around? This couple has likely already used a chunk of their savings on infertility treatments that didn't work...Bravo to them for being so open about their situation.
Google 'adoption fundraising' - there is a lot of this going on out there - some people see others with a need and want to help and some people (like a few of you on here) see someone with a need and want to spit on them.

Freckle Face
Hi Looney Tunes,

It makes me nervous. If you are struggling financial to pay for adoption, how can you afford to raise the child.

They're raising money to adopt a child from China...sounds ok to me. I'm sure the trip alone is a small fortune.

Sophie
I don't see anything wrong with it. I had a similar yard sale (to help with adoption expenses) and posted it as a FUNDRAISER YARD SALE. If people asked what I was fund-raising for, I'd tell them.

Becca
I think it is very tacky.
Go ahead and have a yard sale and put the money towards the adoption if you wish but why the need to advertise it like that?

lady_bella
Freckle Face said exactly what first came to mind when reading your question. If they are struggling to scrape money for this adoption, then the child would not be best to be adopted by them.
Of course, we could be just 'assuming'. It would stir my interest and I would probably ask the ppl in charge of that, of what exactly are they trying to do. Just to be clear. And if Freckle Face and my assumption as to what this means is correct, then I wouldn't involve myself in supporting that.
My former boss adopted a little girl from China. Beautiful too. And it cost A LOT of money, not only for the child adoption, but for the trip itself.
It could be that they just need extra help with travel and they already have the money for the little girl. But still, it would concern me if this is pertaining to them not having enough money for this child, and my main concern would be the child be subjected to a poor living environment. Especially if they are using 'all' of their money for adoption and don't have enough extra for anything else.
I don't know. I am intrigued as to why these ppl would advertise such a thing. If you find out what this entails, let us know. I'd be interested in knowing.

I suppose the people are just trying to attract more people to their yard sale by saying that it is for a good cause. Maybe if a church got together and had a big yard sale to help a couple adopt a child in need. My boyfriends father, who is a pastor, has taken offerings for couples who need money in order to adopt a baby. But I have never seen a yard sale used to raise money for an adoption though... It probably wouldn't raise that much money unless it had multiple families things in it. Hopefully it helped the family out though.

I do not honestly see anything wrong with it- but I don't think I would have had a sign advertising it. It is very expensive to adopt, and if that family chose to sell something material things because they desire a child, that is perfectly ok.

do you really think that someone who can't come up with 1,000s of dollars right away can't afford to raise a child.
They do that because many people are sympathetic people who adopt. Many people can't even imagine doing it so they think you are this great person for adopting and are willing to help especially if you have or can have kids. If you can't then they feel sorry for you and want to help and may pay more or leave a donation and not buy something. Personally i wouldn't do it i find it kind of tacky

If they have to sell things to adoft him/her do you think they should adopt? me i think not, and whats with adopthing aliens, why cant they adopt a kid who lives in the U.S of A (thats where your from right?) There are kids in the U.S. who need help just as bad as these other countries......it just makes me mad how you could go help some other country than and ignor the poverty of your own?

1. Adoption is a beautiful thing.
2. Yard sales are a great way of getting rid of unneeded stuff, making a little extra money, getting stuff to people who may not be able to afford it new, and recycling.

However, I think this particular sign is a tacky way to shame people into helping their cause. If I saw it, I would be skeptical.

Independ"ant"
Its low class and ethically wrong.

What kind of better life are these individuals offering to give a child that's already in poverty. More thorough home studies are needed.

it makes me sick that people think it's okay to have a huge sign in the front yard advertising for funds for a chinese adoption. It's not okay to have a huge fundraiser for adoption, if you can't afford to adopt then how can you afford to take care of the child? don't mean to sound harsh-maybe i'm not just understanding. however people have yard sales for different reasons, so i guess i'm stuck on the tacky sign. that shouldn't of been put up.
