You haven't mentioned where the sib was born.
If it was in the USA - these are the places to start -

First - add details to the registries here
http://www.isrr.net/
http://registry.adoption.com/

Check for information on your state records here -
http://adopteerights.net/nulliusfilius/?page_id=39

Check here for search help - and links to search angels -
http://www.adoptioncrossroads.org/

If you're talking UK or Australia - records are all open (YAY!!) - and searching is a much simpler process.
Add more details if those countries apply.

All the very best with your search.

Possum gave some great information. Although your sister was placed for adoption, that doesn't mean that s/he is adopted. Some children who are placed are not adopted or the adoptions fail early on. If either of these is the case, the birth name will do just fine. That was how I found my sibs. It was assumed they were probably adopted, but they were not.

You can sometimes have luck via the birth indexes in finding a person whose name was changed following an adoption. If a person was born in one of the US states that has a birth index, you can sometimes find the person listed under both the adopted name and under the birth name. You can then make an educated guess regarding the possibility that the two entries are the same person. Even if she's not listed under both, you can make a list of all the girls born on the date and in the place of birth for your sister. This list would then be people who may very well be your sister under her adopted name.

The birth indexes can be accessed on Ancestry.com, although not all states have them. You can use ancestry.com for free for two weeks. That would allow you ample time to check out any birth index if the state where she was born has one.

Your best bet is to research her/him on the internet. Then maybe find another relative that has more information maybe. You can get an investigator for that kind of stuff also, if your willing to go that far. Try just typing their name in google first then maybe you can go to one of those websites that have background checks and research there.

Depending on the person's age, I would suggest social websites like MySpace and FaceBook. One of my parents former foster children is looking into this too, and that was my suggestion to him. If the person is over 18 now, you may be able to find out through birth records at the hospital and track them that way. The courthouse may be another place to look
