If you were born in the US, you CAN open a closed adoption.
You need to hire a lawyer, and he/she needs to file a motion to break the seal on the adoption.
It is possible, but this law varies state, I would speak with an attorney immediately.
Also, you need a valid reason for wanting the seal broken; you need your medical history; you need to see your biological family for some specific reason; etc.

In my home state, a law was passed forbidding closed adoptions. The records were unsealed and any adoptee can access their records. It's not fair when an adopted person cannot access their records and find their roots.
Go to your State's website and look under Vital Statistics/Records, then Birth Records, and you may be able to get some information from that. If a phone number is listed, call it and ask WHERE you can get copies of your adoption records. Don't mention that they are closed or sealed. Sometimes playing ignorant will get you more information than acting like you know what you're talking about. I think those people have more pity on a person they think doesn't know anything and will provide all kinds of information. I've done it with other departments and it worked for me. lol

Can you give a bit more detail? Are you trying to access closed records, or open the lines of communication between adoptive and first family members? |

In most cases, you can not. Once the closed adoption is final it's pretty much closed for good.

If you are the birth mother, and opted for a closed adoption, I do not believe there is anyway to change that.....unless, you somehow were able to reach the adoptive parents and discuss it with them? I imagine if they were open to "opening" the adoption, there would be some way to change the papers.
However if you signed over your parental rights, and the adoption is finalized as a closed adoption, I do not believe there is anyway to change that... I'm sorry. |
