How do you think that this relates to adoption? (or perhaps parenting in general?)?

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

- from Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet

Amazing! I think every parent should take a long, hard look at this and seriously think on it. Are we all doing everything we can to honour and cherish our children, to help develop their sense of self without projecting our own sense of self onto them?

Throughout my house i have positive and thoughtful sayings hung as artwork. This is one of my favorites. I read it often:)

I've always loved this passage. I think it relates to parenting in general (bio and adopted).

We raise children, we instill values and share our hopes and dreams for them... but ultimately they are separate individuals who need to live their own lives, to find their own path even if it is very different than the plan we wanted for them.

To me it speaks to parenting in general. Our children, adopted or not, are gifts that we have the honor and pleasure to raise and teach to become happy, productive, and emotionally healthy adults.

Thanks for sharing....I like it a lot.

"They come through you but not from you,"

I disagree with this line. Mine are from me and my husband, and our families--good and bad.

Otherwise, it's lovely.

i love it. It makes you think about how much you really
" know "your kids.

This is extremely powerful. Thank you for sharing.

If more parents (regardless of original or adoptive) would realize this idea, it would do so much for families.

Thank you again for sharing.

I agree with most, but not the whole poem.

"You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts." - This is true, but it's what we teach and how we raise our children that lead them down life on gathering their own thoughts. If a "skin head" who "loves" their child teaches them that white is right and all others are wrong, won't that child grow up to mimic the actions of the parent? They eventually make decisions of right and wrong, but hasn't the parent already set them down a path of destructive action?

As parents, we do learn a lot from our children as well, but they learn much more through our actions then we think to believe.

I actually thought that was quite interesting and spiritual. I suppose non-spiritual folks may not like it. The only weird thing is the first line... but in full context I get what it means.

I love to seek out the views/thoughts of the world through children because their minds are untainted. Their energy is new and fresh and they have such great potential to change the world.

I've learned alot from listening to my 3-year-old. Sometimes I find myself starting to talk over him and then I stop because what he has to say is important.

I respect my son's thoughts and opinions at his young age. But, as a parent, I feel that I should teach him right from wrong and understand the sometimes very fine lines:

Personally, I have this issue with using animals for human entertainment... and when a commercial for a circus came on tv, ofcourse, my son got all excited and asked if we were going to see it. I told him that I just dont' like the idea of animals being forced to entertain humans. He said, "I like it." I told him that we differ in opinions and that's just fine. Maybe when he's older he'll see my point of view; maybe not. But everyone's different, that's what's so neat about our world.

I then told him about the kind of circus that I liked, the Circque de Soleil (Spelling?) and told him that it's all humans entertaining humans because they want to... no animals. We'll end up going to both so he can see both.

Anyway.......

Cathy
i'd say parenting. adoption is just the process of becoming parents.
