How long did it take you to pick up adoption lingo?
|
I was just curious because I had no idea what DD, DH, DS, etc meant. When I first got on this forum, I was like, "What's a PAP?" How long did it take you to understand all the adoption specific abbreviations and lingo

i grew up with it.
although, my amother always called my bmother my "real mother" or my "natural mother".
when i met another first mother, after four years, she went totally left and started using the term "first" mother, so i now go with that out of respect for her. |

As I frequented many adoption sites in a short period of time, I learned the lexicon pretty quickly. When you first hear it though... the first time I heard PAP, I got a cold shiver thinking of stirrups and cold steel instruments LOL!!!!
Some sites have a legend on the side, which is helpful for newbies to adopto-land. |

Not very long, but coming from a military family, I am used to acronyms. |

I have figured out a few things but I'm still learning - and I still don't know what DD HD DS means. I had never seen any shortforms like those before - but then again I haven't had much contact with people associated with adoption. |

Not very long, a week or so maybe. Maybe only because I'm a little ridiculously interested in it and love to read as much as I can. But yeah, when I first saw it, I was like "HUH"? |

I got all the other ones pretty quickly (if I didn't know one, I asked). But I didn't know what TTC was until like this morning, which is pretty pathetic. HAHA! |

It took a while, and the real shame of it is, by watching television, and seeing that women there were being called birth mothers, etc. on there, I accidentally called our son's 1st mom that in front of her, not realizing the offense that anyone would take from it. I felt so bad after, and I wish I'd found this forum, before I had adopted.
I actually had to ask what a few things meant, and a woman took me under her wing, and sent me an e-mail which explained some of the stuff. Wow, that's another thing I learned here! |

My work deals with short forms all the time so it didn't take long before I picked up on a new one when I see it. |

I don't remember exactly, but I remember that it was pretty fast. I was lucky though because when I started out as a lurker on here, a lot of people used abbreviations AND the full term. |

Not long. It was so gradual, though, that I can't really pinpoint when I started to learn all the terms. Probably didn't take me longer than a week or two. |

I have been here for two years and have no clue as to what DD, DH, and DS mean - but TTC is trying to conceive....I guess I am better at TTFN - ta ta for now! HA. Good question though and someone else stated that someone should list them as a question and maybe we could all do some type of poll - we would atleast learn something new today. |

So about 2 months in this forum, and I am STILL learning all the lingo, you would think as a 11 year military wife, I would be GREAT at all the acronyms! LOL! I don't know what TTC is though! Some of you should list a bunch of them for us, post it as a question! I have most of it down, though I am always worried about using a term wrong and accidentally insulting someone. |

Hello,
I believe you learn the lingo as to whatever group you belong to. Are you talking about a chat group where they mean DD "dear dad" and DH "dear husband"? In adoption we refer to birth mother, BM, maternal grandmother, MGM, Paternal grandfather, PGF, etc. It is also not really a politically correct term anymore to say natural mother, it is noted as birth mother.
www.adoption.com is a great website to learn more about adoptions...

I have only been here less than 2 weeks so I am very unfamiliar with the Lingo here! But want to learn!
I just started using First Mom instead of Birth Mother which I like much better! |
