If the child is under 14 (and in situation over 14) you can get a new unattached number by taking the adoption decree and the new birth record to social services and you get to wait the 2-3 weeks... you have to wait until you get those documents first, and they may hold them for review....
if this is international they have a different process, but you need the birth record with current name and adoption records from court... but there is some way to get a tax ID in some ways if you was waiting for new documents, you can always file an ammended tax return as well when you do finally get the new number |

It should only take maximum 14 business days...it should be the same length of time for an adopted baby as any other. |

I don't think you can change a social security number. As far as I know they do that in the hospitals now and mail in the information. Good luck sorry I can;t help more. |

is it an international adoption? if so i'm not sure.
if they were born in the USA they already have one...you just have to request a new card, not a new number. |
