How much do we have to earn per annum to adopt?

My family (me husband son) are now starting to get serious about adoption...but we are lower-middle class financially. I can't find anything about a rough estimate in ANY of the research I've been doing over the last year. I think that we'd pass all the other 'tests' but I'm not sure about money. And I don't want to get our hopes up or waste anyones time with any harrowing processes just to find out that we don't fit the bill financially.
Additional Details
I must not have been clear. I'm not trying to pay for/buy a child and I'm not looking for the fees of adoption. In my state (Vic, Qld,NT etc) in Aus there are 5 or 6 long processes with social workers and adoption agences and it is in the 3rd/4th that they see if you meet the financial standards of adoption...to be able to look after them financially. Before they check if you are financially 'able' they go through the emotional, parental, family stability etc first.

You need to earn enough per year to be able to support a child. Thats not a smart azz answer, it's just the benchmark that is used.

Someone could make $100,000 a year but have massive debts, live in a high priced area and not be able to afford a child. On the other hand, someone could make $40,000 a year, have a nice clean rented apartment at a reasonable rent, have no other major debts and could support a child.

Well, you appear to be asking this question from Australia, so I would contact social services, since as far as I know, private adoption is illegal where you are. It will depend what the stipulations are in your area for foster and adoptive parents, but ideally, you will be in a position to provide a safe home with nutritious food, clean and adequate space, and a range of extracurricular activities for a child's growth and development.

The emotional needs are much more complex. Please make sure you do your research before moving forward. Reading here is a start.

ETA: Your added details have me confused...I am the only answerer so far, and I never said that you were trying to "buy" a child, nor did I speak to "fees". I was referring to your financial capacity, in the context of your area's cost of living to provide an adequate living situation for a child. If you are looking for a specific income level, that is impossible to say, since a financial assessment will be much more complex than that. They will already have specific guidelines set out, and will likely take into account your current debt load, fixed expenses, job security, etc. There is no way for you to get a simple answer to this question online. People making enormous amounts of money can be broke, and people with a modest income can be doing very well. It's all in how you spend it, and your local cost of living.
