How much does it cost to adopt a child?

I'm not sure how much it costs but I was thinking it was thousands. Is this true? And if so why so much. It seems to me that only rich people are allowed to adopt

In the US - if you adopt through foster care (where there are over 120,000 waiting for a loving permanent home) it will cost you almost nothing. They are the kids that really need adoption.

If you go privately - through so called 'non profit agencies' - which make huge profits for their owners - it will cost you tens of thousands of dollars - and they too often sadly use coercive tactics to get babies from mothers - to make more and more money - even when adoption may not be the best option for the mother and the child.
(they look after their own bank balance first and foremost)

Rich people sadly like to get whatever they want - and don't care how much it costs - or what effect their actions will have on anyone but themselves.
All those adoptees will need a great deal of therapy when they grow up.

We just adopted a child from an agency and the fees were about 15K for a domestic adoption.

It really depends how you do it.

An international adoption can cost as little as $800 US, which is what it cost my wife and I when we were temporarily living overseas and we adopted directly from the country we were living in. It can also cost as much as $30,000+ US if you do it from home.

A domestic adoption can be as little as free, which is what it cost us to adopt through foster care this past summer. If you want to go through an agency or privately it can cost almost as much as an international adoption, or more in some areas.

I assure you, I am far from rich having served in the military for 23 years, and we have done the two adoptions noted above. It's all about educating yourself and being familiar with the options and the systems available to you.

In the US...

Adoption through foster care is free or low cost. These are definitely the children in greatest need of families.

Newborn domestic adoption is usually done through private adoption using an agency or a lawyer. This is expensive, probably 12,000-20,000+.

International adoption is also expensive, and children can be infants or older. However they will be at least 6 mo or older before they are placed internationally. Many times they are closer to a year or 18 mo, but this varies by country.

Adoption is expensive. However you don't necessarily have to be "rich". There is an adoption tax credit if you make below around $160,000 that covers about $10,000 of the cost. Not everyone involved in adoption is corrupt as some in this group will tell you. They don't all coerce pregnant mothers (although sadly it does happen).
