How old do you have to be?
|
Firstly I am not planning on adopting when I am older until I am about 40!
This is only for knowledge reasons!!
I know that legally you can adopt at 18 years old but do you have to be old enough to be a parent (like could a 18y/o adopt a 12y/o even though they were only 6 when they were born?) Additional Details I know that you have to be a suitable parent but if you pass all the requirements is is possible?
And I am not planning on adopting for another 25 years!!

Wow, I don't know. Maybe that small of an age gap could not matter if it is an older sibling trying to adopt a younger sibling?.?.? You know in cases where something happened to their parents and they are no longer around.

adoption specifics differ from agency to agency. wait until you are getting ready, and contact agencies to see what all is required. there is more to it than being old enough. |

most if not all states say you must be 21 to adopt. Some agencies require you to be 25 or 30. As adopting from some countries have their own age limits. Also, most states have an age difference to adopt. Wisconsin says you must be 15 years older than the child you are adopting. so a 21 year old could not adopt a 12 year old. |

Domestic (US) adoption age restrictions vary from agency to agency. International adoptions also have restrictions from the home country. China does not allow you to adopt unless you are over 30. Some countries won't allow someone to adopt an infant if they are over a certain age, or require a minimum age difference between adoptive family and adoptee. Other countries have no restrictions at all.
I don't think your hypothetical situation would happen and I can't imagine any responsible social worker supporting the idea of an 18 year old adopting a 12 year old. There are so many things wrong with that scenario, it's hard to know where to start. |

That's a bit hard to answer as the adoptions laws may have changed again in the next 25 yrs. Good luck then it happens for you. :) |

Restrictions also vary from country to country on International adoptions, state to state for domestic and foster adoptions, and can be set at a certain number of years older than the child you are adopting (both minimum and maximum). Also, I would imagine that such rules will change quite a bit over the next 25 years. |
