How would I go about finding my half sister?
Find answers to your legal question.

How would I go about finding my half sister?

I found out a few years ago that I have a older half sister.
My mother gave her up for adoption. I know my mother was in her early 20's, not sure exactly how old. She passed away when I was a baby.
No one knows what adoption agency she used. No one really can give me anymore info.

I don't have any other brothers or sisters, so I would like to find her if I could. And get to know her if she would be willing.

I just don't know how to go about trying to locate her.
Any help would be appreciated.

Start with what you DO know...and build from there. Do you have aunts or uncles who may know when she had your sister? Do you know of a close girlfriend of hers? (I have a best friend who could tell anyone in my family a LOT about me) You might try registering on classmates.com (use her name) for her high school graduating class.

Do you know what state she gave birth in? Here's a resource page that gives contacts by state:
http://adopteerights.net/nulliusfilius/?page_id=39

If you have some information, try registering with the International Soundex Reunion Registry or ISRR at:
http://www.isrr.net/

Also register with the birth state's registry (if they have one).

Feel free to contact me and let me know some stats. I can better point you in a direction with a little more info.

I found my 1/2 sister in 1983. I met our mother the following weekend. LONG before state registries and the internet. I'll be happy to help!

Best of luck!

Robin gave you some great resources. If you can talk to your other family members, such as grandparents/aunts/uncles, even your father, they may hold some valuable clues as to when your sister was born. Even being able to narrow it down to a month will be good.

Also, you sister may be searching for you, so go to some of the online reunion registries and enter your Mom's name. You never know.

Once you have more information, it may not be too difficult. Good luck with your search, hun! I am newly in reunion with my brothers, and it is fantastic.

ask your family on your mom side

they might know about your mom's past

Does anyone know what hospital she gave birth at? Hospitals all have records, you can start there.

Also, if you are serious about finding her, go to the county records office. Every county has records of births, you might have to spend days looking, but she is in there somewhere.....
