How would I make it possible to adopt and save a certain child from a group home?

I am a parent who has recently discovered that my daughter's best friend belle has recently been forced to move into a group home in Nevada city. She is a nice ,nonviolent girl who has recently been let out of a mental institution and is on meds for depression but is moving along and was very happy with her life. She had some problems with her own mom and step dad like any 15 year old girl, but loved her mom very much.A couple weeks ago,her mom had a baby ,and was worried about belle and her step dad's arguing around the baby, and even expressed her worries about belle hurting or even killing the baby which is ridiculous. After a fight with her mom, belle moved into my house, which I own,and was still in therapy and in close contact with her mom.We also enrolled her in summer tutoring with my daughter, that she was more than happy to go to.after a few weeks of staying with us,she went to a family meeting, which was normal, but to our horror, returned to tell us she would have to go to a facility in the next town for a month to live. After discovering where she really was[a group home] Belle immediately escaped and hitchhiked back to my house. Her mother called crying and said she "just wanted to know if she was ok" and so we told her.She then picked Belle up and brought her to Crisis, which placed her in a mental institution. And is now getting transferred to a group home in nevada city ,to live for the last 3 years of her childhood. It seems like her mom really doesn't want her,but what doesn't make Sense why she is trying to keep her away from living with me.She claims it is all cps but now it is apparent that she is lying through her teeth and making her poor little girl believe that it is her own fault for being crazy. It is my goal to make sure she is safe and with people who love her,on the road to a good happy life.Is there any way I could become a foster parent and adopt her once she is in the group home? Will we need her mothers consent?

Well its good you have a good heart. Poor girl, she needs some stability. I don't know how long it will take, but you need a license to be a foster parent. After that, you'll probably have to talk to a lawyer or social worker about fostering the child. It might take a few months before you get a chance to "prove your case". If she does stay on her meds, she will be fine. Its when she doesn't take it, that she will be a danger. No reason for her to spend the rest of her childhood in a mental institution. How is she suppose to supoort herself afterward? It doesn't seem like her mom is thinking about the girl's future. Plus, with no support or family, she will become severly depressed. The depression will make her not take her meds, then she will end up right back in the mental institution. Try your hardest to get a foster parent license. You should be able to get one in your town. Just look up foster parenting classes and such on the internet. I hope you get a chance to foster the poor girl and give her a good stable life. Good luck. |

there's always two sides to every story. get all the facts you need before subjecting yourself to anything you might regret later. Sometimes being too nice can be to our own detriment. Good luck |

Contact CPS and inquire about this child---I wouldn't be surprised if they allow her to live with you. A residential or group home is always the last place for a child. If the child is in the custody of CPS you will not need her parent's consent. |

You are foolish to put yourself in the middle of this situation. you don't know the child, except for the little you have seen her. You need to back off. If the child needs safekeeping, then the child needs safekeeping, and you shouldn't second guess the placement unless or until you have a psych report in your hands.
Teens can be very compelling.
Let me ask you this. Are you prepared to cut her down from the closet and try to revive her by giving her mouth to mouth to her lifeless blue face?
If you think you can handle the acting out, (and she will act out in your home, don't kid yourself) then get started getting your foster parent license. You will need the classes and training and lots of wisdom that comes with experience. |
