How would PAP's feel if citizens of the European Union can adopt from Romania, while US citizens can't.
Romania has closed it's borders for inter-country adoption years ago, much to the chagrin of adoption agencies and quite a lot of PAP's.
Especially in France and Italy, where the waiting lists for international adoption are ten times longer than the number of children received each year, the pressure to re-open Romania never stopped and in both countries much resentment lives towards the USA, which, in their eyes, gets all the babies on the international adoption market.
There now is a proposal for a European adoption system, backed by France and Italy that should make adoption possible between member states of the European Union. Since Romania is a member of the European Union, that way they can be forced to open their borders for adoption to other European countries, while European adopters don't have to face the competition of the United States.

Independent: The proposal for a European adoption system IS about the "wants" of PAP's and AP's, just not American PAP's and AP's, but in this case French and Italian ones.

But isn't this the poster's point, that countries can't do as they see fit for their own children...if they want to be part of a broader international coalition...then they have to agree to give their children (their most precious resource) to other nations in this consortium?
Well, I don't know, but since the paps weren't answering, thought I would.

Speaking as an international adoptive parent (China) and a current PAP through domestic foster care, I learned pretty quickly that we have ZERO control over the process and rules and regulations. You'll do your head in if you dwell on the fairness of why them and not me. The fact is that sending countries can do whatever they want. Their children, their rules. |

I would support it. I think that until we clean up our own broken system, find solutions and take care of the children here we shouldn't be dragging kids around the globe and away from their heritage. I tired of it being about an Paps or Aps "wants" and not the needs of children. If Paps want to say all children need homes well than I say donate money or get involved to fix their system because adopting children isn't a solution. It just satisfies your wants.
ETA: I'm not for the proposal itself, I should have been more clear but I'm for anything that keeps big US money out of foreign adoptions. The insatiable appetite of US paps for babies/toddlers contribute the most to the atrocities right along with our neighboring Canadians. |
