I am a single american woman living in india, wanting to adopt indian child....need help!!!!! ?

Is this possible? I know of a precious little girl living with a reputable NGO. She is HIV positive. What are the chances, that I, as a single american woman residing in India long term with a business visa can adopt this precious child? What process do I need to start? Can you give me any contacts for the Bangalore area? Is this possible, or am I chasing an impossible dream?

Why don't you ask NGO people about adoption methods.. they will help you..

As for as I know Indians don't usually like to give adoption to single parent that too from abroad.. I think you may need to prove lots of things like family back ground, financial status and all...

still you are doing a noble thing I hope you wl succeed.. good Luck..

I believe your question has already been answered by another user but if you want more information on the process that my wife and I followed while living in India (although in the early 90s the process hasn't changed that much) please feel free to contact me through my profile. I'll try to answer your questions that way rather then clog up the answer space.

CARA (Central adoption resource agency a goverment body that forms regulations about adoption) allows Singles to adopt.

So yes you can adopt. Living in India though not a citizen you can easily foster to adopt.

Infact there is another Canadian user-Randy B here who while living in India adopted his daughter from India. He will have a lot of information on the process for a foreigner.

I wish you all the best.

I'm also living in India and looked into adopting a little. I'm not sure it is as easy as the other respondents think. You should check out the CARA website. Also there is a yahoo group called ichild where you can get some information. We have decided not to adopt, for several reasons, one of which is age limit (I assume it won't apply to you). However there is a preference for Indian or NRI couples. Also the waits are long, and there are lots of delays in the system. There have been a series of adoption scandals in indian, and in an effort to avoid them, the system is very complicated and some what unpredictable. It does help that you're open to a special needs child, since they are harder to place. Also I'm not sure about US immigration law, but from what I understand you would have to have the child with you for 2 years, before the child could immigrate to the US. So depending how long you plan to be in india this could be a problem. I'm not sure about this, but some things I've read indicate this - so check it out for yourself before you go too far. Since it won't be an international adoption the 2 yr rule applies, and you can't adopt from a US based agency while you are living outside the country ( catch-22). The CARA website has information on approved adoption agencies for each state. (http://www.adoptionindia.nic.in/)
