I am interested in adopting a child?
Find answers to your legal question.

I am interested in adopting a child?

I never really liked the idea of adopting, I wanted my own. But as time passed by I started thinking of these children who unfortunately don't have the love and warmth of a family. So now I'd like to adopt one. I am looking for children in the pre-teen and teen ages, preferably a female. I am wondering what I have to do to adopt someone. Is it expensive? If so why.. I don't believe people should be charged for adopting a child. But anyway, if anyone has adopted and or know information about adopting let me know, thanks!

I am not infertile, and I still do want my own children, I just would like to adopt one also..

I think it doesn't really matter what you used to think of adoption. People who aren't just a little wary of the challenges of adoption aren't thinking about it clearly enough, IMO. Your line of reasoning seems sound. It is not that you suddenly changed your mind about having children, this isn't a whim. You want children, you know there are unloved children out there, you want to have a family that includes children both adopted and biologically yours... that seems fair to me.

The trouble you get into is this; you seem to be a single, childless male adult looking to adopt a teen or preteen girl. That is going to send a red flag up for every child protection agency in the known world. I don't know precisely how you could avoid looking so dangerous, but you might want to consider that.

Most, if not all agencies placing children will require a home study done by a reputable institution. These people will come to your house, will poke through your things, will ask you invasive questions, and then they will do it all over again a few weeks later. Don't take offense, they mean well.

Aside from that, get a lawyer, and look up your state's waiting child lists (many agencies have them available online, which seems a little too much like window shopping for a kid, but whatever floats their boats, I guess.)

For older kids you really have to go to local and state agencies. They have lists of kids for foster and fost/adopt programs. Just open your phonebook and look for state or city agencies that deal with disadvantaged kids (like child protective services or whatever they call it in your area)

You will need a lawyer at some point, so find one that does adoptions and explain what you want to, they will know how to guide you

Its not expensive to adopt as long as you avoid adoption agencies (private, not govt) and adoption facilitators. Just go thru your laywer and they will tell you what to do, should not be more than $5k, most likely less, and it will provide a 100% credit on your federal income tax, so it will end up being free in the end

Good luck

its preferable if ur married that way the child can have a family and u do have to have a good income. the agencies have to be sure the child will be well taken care of and wont be in need of any necessary supplies like clothing or food.

You can adopt through the state. You should probably adopt a boy though. That is unless you are married. If you do adopt don't tell your child you didn't like adoption you wanted your own. If you still feel this way at all then you might should think about this some more. It might not be in the childs best interest. If you are adopting it needs to be because, you want that child. Not because, they were your last option. How painful would that be. My husband and I want to adopt. If I were a mother looking for an adoptive family there is no way I would want an infertile couple adopting my child. You know your child was just a last choice. Then what happens if they all of a sudden miraculously get pregnant. Then there is a chance that your child will end up being something they wish they hadn't done and they will never be treated as well as their child by blood.

I don't know if you are a good candidate for a prospective adoptive parent if you "never really liked the idea of adoption".
