I am a 40y/o single nurse who would like to experience the joy of motherhood and give a home to a child. Does any one have any info on the best place to go and the cost. I am particuarily interested in african american children, because I feel the need is great, and as an african american myself, I feel I can help this child a great deal in his or her life. I live in NY.

The best way to adopt is to become a Foster Parent with the intent to adopt. Pick private Foster Parenting agencies, the give you the most help and it is easier to adopt. Many Foster Parenting agencies will cover the cost to adopt and may also give you help after the adoption too. Fostering Parenting and adoption is the best reward a person can give to a children the security of a forever home and a lifetime of love. You can also adopt a sibling group of children. Visit different Private Foster Parenting agencies, and find out the requirements, some are much more stricter then others. Best Wishes and Happy Adoption! |

You can contact any adoption agency in any state that works with New York (many do not). That is the first question to ask!
The fees will range from $8000-$20,000 depending on the agency, the birthmother expenses, etc.
Get a homestudy done first. This will be about $500-$900. Then put together a nice looking Profile and Birthmother letter. See adoptive parents websites online for suggestions. They need to be attractive and lots of photos and a sincere letter. Once your homestudy is approved, then send a copy to any agency you are interested in. You will NOT need to pay any fees up front, as there are many agencies who do not charge this. You will need to pay the fe when the baby is placed with you , or right before.
You may want to contact:
PACT An Adoption Alliance
Adoptions of the Heart (Illinois)
Angel Adoptions (Houston)
Good luck! |

Oh, goodness gracious! It sounds like you're a social worker's dream! Good for you!
Go to:
http://www.ocfs.state.ny.us/adopt/
to learn about adopting from the foster system. This is where the greatest need is, imho.
You can find out the requirements & process as well as look at the photo listing!
I'm sorry, I should have also added that the cost for adopting from the foster system is free or nearly so. There are federal tax credits (go to http://www.irs.gov and search for "adoption tax credit for info) and some states also have tax credits if some of the expenses aren't reimbursed by the state. |

adopting in the states is very expensive I would say with legal fees, adoption fees, e.t.c maybe close to $40,000 but definatly not under 20k which is why some people opt to adopt kids from other countries. The reason is because the government doesn't want poor people to adopt kids because they want to make sure that the parents have enough money and resources to sustain the child and also alot of couples and women want to adopt in the U.S so the demand is high. |

a child s adopting price is about around $20,000
its that much because if your a evil person who does bad stuff to kids then, i dont think you would pay that much. |

if you adopt from the state or DCF it's free and they pay you a monthly stipend. If you take a medically needy children they put you to the top of the list. Here in FL we have lots of af/am children...I just adopted 2. we have a hard time in fl because we have lots of af/am children but af/am families don't adopt as much as caucasian families. i dont know why. see some of the waiting children on your states dcf website or below. |

I am currently awaiting an adoption referral from China so I have heard alot about adoption lately. In fact, I recently learned that in Florida there are many kids including African American ones who may be a little older or are in sibling pairs that need to stay together which makes them harder to find parents for, but if someone adopts them, the child's medical care is paid for as is their college education. I saw brochures for this at our last waiting families get together. |

I understand. I don't know about adoption there, but one thing you can do for sure, is foster a child, with the intention to adopt. :o) This is what I am planning to do. I want to foster several children and adopt as many as I possibly can.
I'm thinking that foster care homes would also know how to help refer you for adoptions. Also start asking people-soon you will find some one who has adopted and then you'll have a referral and a friend who has gone through it already and can give you advice and support you.
Good luck! Keep in touch and let me know what happens :) |
