I am searching for my birth sister, how do you find an adopted sibling?
Find answers to your legal question.

I am searching for my birth sister, how do you find an adopted sibling?

I know her birth name, date of birth, and mothers name and place of birth. She was born in Ohio. What are my chances of finding her?

Too Funny
Write a letter to her, and take it to the Social Security
Office, and have them mail it to her. Put a stamp on the
envelope, and your Return Address. (It must be unsealed).
Put letters to the Editor in the Newspapers near where she
was born. This helps find other relatives, and also you
will probably hear from some people who have known her.
Your chances are good about finding her. No one can stay
hid for good....
You must ''spread the word" and allow others to help you
with the search.
There are probably blood relatives still living, where the
sister and the mother was born too.
You can obtain birth certificate on the mother and it will
give much information on family.
Unless the sister is / has been in an Adoptive home,
there is also a birth certificate on her.
If these two people attended school, after 1914, (pertains
to anyone), there is school enrollment information, in the
courthouse, of where they attended school. This information
is Public Records, and it can be obtained by writing to the
County Clerk of that Courthouse.
There is always the chance that if you know if they were
born in a hospital, birth hospital records are also public
information.
Place an inquiry on the many websites, for seeking contact
with a relative.
If you can afford to hire an investigator, which many people
can, then get them to help too. That is their business.
I have also contacted a Sheriff's Office, and had someone
get on the computer, and see where someone could be
found, by the general area of where they lived. It worked.

Is she and are you an adult? Your chances are actually very good. You have a lot to go on. Do you know if there was an agency involved? That is the first place I would start. If someone (adult, not a child) writes and asks to have a letter placed in their file for any relative trying to find them and gives their contact information to the agency the agency will usually release the information after getting court approval. That is how I found my birth mother. Please feel free to email me.

It will be tough - I don't know if she's married or not - and you also don't know if she is still in that state. I would start by contacting the county clerks office where she was born and you'll have to pay for a copy of her birth certificate. Explain you are doing geneology research. Anyways you may be able to find some clue that you didn't have info. on. But there are a lot of details left out....was it an open adoption?- was it through an agency? You could contact the hospital probably too.

Fairly good depending on the year of her birth. Try registering the info with this site. There are many very good OH searchers on there and maybe they can help.

A couple of avenues you can try. One is online adoption registries. Register & see if she's there, too. Another idea is to hire a private detective. Give the PI the information & have them track the rest of it down.

Try www.adoption.com and look in the Registry at the top of the page.

Birth parents, grandparents and adoptees are allowed to register. You might be able to get some information there. Also, you will be allowed to register so maybe she will find you.

The baby girl I gave up 25 years ago found me on that site.

Good Luck and be persistent!
