Successful searching depends greatly on your age - are you over 18??
You don't mention it.
Having a birth surname is a huge help.
Here is a site for late discovery adoptees when many good articles -
http://www.latediscovery.org/
Here's some searching links / places to start -
First - add your details to the registries here
http://www.isrr.net/
http://registry.adoption.com/
Check for information on your state records here -
http://adopteerights.net/nulliusfilius/?page_id=39
Check here for search help - and links to search angels -
http://www.adoptioncrossroads.org/
And check here for any support - it's the best online forum for adoptees I've found -
http://www.adultadoptees.org/
All the very best with your search.
ETA: I've assumed you're in the USA - if not - please add more details - and I'll add more links.
ETA 2: woo hoo - you're in the UK - that means open records available to you!! (for all over 18!)
It shouldn't cost you too much to get your files (you gain them through the government)
Here are links to get you started -
http://www.norcap.org.uk/default.html
http://www.uktrackers.co.uk/index.htm
Still check out the adoptee forum - we have adoptees from all over the world visit - and it's a great forum for search help and support.
All the best. |

I contacted the adoption agency my parents went thru. They provided me with some non identifying information and paperwork to file with the state's registry. I did that and got in contact with my birthmother as she registered as well. I know some people don't like the state registries and it's not always well known about. Otherwise, there are websites out there where you submit the information you know and others are on there looking as well. |

Do you know what hospital you were born at? They probably have records, although they may not be legally able to tell you if you are a minor. |

I am adopted as well. It depends on what kind of adoption you had (open or closed) and how old you are. If you had an open adoption, the state courts are required to unseal your adoption records when you are 18 and give them to you if you want them. There are also some websites that can help you search for long lost relatives but be careful before you spend money on any of the sites. Good luck. If you are meant to find them, you will :) |
