As an adoptive mom who has gone thru the process I will let you know that infant adoptions are handled by adoption agencies. The adoption of young children (older than 1 year old) is handled by the State agencies or private agencies that provide foster care services.
Adopting thru the foster system of your state (i.e., Foster-to-Adopt program) is free to the adoptive parent with regard to adoption fees. You will have to pay for any alterations to your home if the home study identifies any safety issues (like we had to purchase fire extinguishers and a fire ladder for our home).
I've heard from Foster parents that in order to get an infant or a child younger than 1 year old you have to be a Foster-to-Adopt parent. The difficulty here is that you may have to foster several children before there is a child available for you. So if you are willing to provide a safe haven for a few young children while waiting for your special angel, then F-to-A may be for you. If you feel that this would be too emotionally hurtful, then you could consider just being an adoptive parent thru the foster-to-adopt program of your state (this is what we are doing). The downside is the wait for the child (although we've been told by foster parents that our wait will not be as long as the State tells us.)
I would suggest that you find out when the next foster parent/foster-to-adopt introductory meeting will be held in your county (call your state agency for details) and attend this meeting. Then make a decision as to whether you want to go thru the training. The training course is designed to help you make this decision, so I would suggest you take it. I learned a lot about parenting and about the children that go thru the "system". I'm looking forward to the call that they've found our angel!
Good luck and don't stop asking questions! |

infants are not usually available for adoption through the state. GA DCF Children are removed from their parents custody due to abuses or neglect. The parents then work a case plan to try to reunite them. This can take years. By now the child is 5 and has 4 year old brother when the parents rights are completely terminated and these kids then usually get adopted by their foster parent. If you would like to foster and you are willing to take in a biracial or african american baby, you may be able to adopt that child after a few years. But during the time you have the baby you have to try to reunite the child with the parent. |
