What is an adoption center?

Are you imagining a big room with adoptable babies waiting for for parents?

Try Big Brothers/Big Sisters, they have lots of kids on the Island who need someone like you.

What is it that you want to do?
Take babies away from their mothers and give them to strangers?

If you want to help CHILDREN, volunteer with at-risk kids, be a Big Brother/Big Sister, or if you are old enough, become a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocated) for foster children.

In the US - there are no adoption centers, there is Foster/Adopt and children who can not be reunited with their birth parents or cared for by extended family are placed in foster care and then after many attempts at reunification - may be adopted and usually are adopted by the foster parents.

You can volunteer with the Department of Social Services - Department of Children and Families - either as a mentor (like big brothers/big sisters) or perhaps in another capacity. There are some programs that may be looking for volunteers to help at-risk kids (in playing, homework help etc) or something like that - but you might also check with one of the Boys & Girls Clubs on LI - they usually have programs to volunteer to help kids also.

You may also find that you can volunteer or intern at Family Court where adoptions are processed. Sometimes the court is in need a of sitter or play supervisor - or you can assist in other ways and that is where the legal aspects of domestic adoptions are completed - in Family Court. I could probably suggest more - but I am not exactly sure what aspect of adoption you are interested in learning more about.

Good Luck! Volunteering is a great way to learn, make friends and help serve the community!!

I'm not sure what type of work you want to do in an "Adoption Center" are you interested in working with children, their mothers or the people who want to adopt?
