I need some info on having my soon to be husband adopt my 6 month old baby.?

I need help gettin info. I am in Canada.. and have a six month old baby. The bio-dad was not around during the pregnancy.. and has only seen my baby a few times. He is no longer a part of the babies life.. He does pay child support.. but I have sole guardianship and custody. I am wondering if anyone knows where I can look for info on having my soon to be husband adopt my baby when we get married... thanks!
Additional Details
I am completely aware that the Father will not pay child support when my baby is adopted.. and I fully understand that my soon to be husband will be legally entitled to my child... but I wouldn't be marrying him if I didn't feel that he would do what was best for my baby at all times!

I don't know about the legalities - but please make sure that you never lie to this child about who his bio father is.
Adoptees need to know their truth.
Genetics are a huge part of me - I didn't know how huge until I finally met my bio sister - after 37 years. We are SO very alike in so many many ways - not just looks.
It will not be confusing for the child - it's the adults that think things will be confusing.
It's his truth - he needs to know it.
Your child will not love their new daddy any less - it has nothing to do with that.
You may have problems with your ex - but please don't let them be known to your child.
Your child is half of your ex.
If you have a problem with the ex - your child will think that there is something wrong with her/him.
Just be aware.
All children just want to know and love all their family members if they can - and be loved in return.
Adults splitting up etc - is just that - adult stuff.
Perhaps also think about keeping the bio father's surname somewhere within the baby's new name (a middle name or something) - as again - it's part of who the baby is.
Your actions will affect your child for the rest of their life.

District Attorney-at least in the U.S. I was in the similar situation and my husband adopted my daughter when she was 3 she's now 9 and things are great! make sure this is what you want to do-if you ever get divorced you may have a custody battle on your hands with the new hubby...................... (god forbid) Good Luck to you!

The Wife
In the US the bio dad has to give up his rights first. I don't know how it works in Canada though.

Whether you have sole guardianship and custody doesn't matter. You will still need the bio-dad to sign off on the adoption because he has not abandoned the child (he is paying child support - that qualifies as contact). You need a lawyer who specializes in adoption law to start the arrangements, but it is probably pointless to do so until you are married. In my state, you have to have been married to the husband for a year before they will even consider a stepparent adoption unless he is the actual biological father of the child (as happens in cases of adultery). Canadian provinces may have the same requirements.

airbob61@verizon.net
The biological father must be willing to give up his parental rights. You should also be aware that if your soon to be husband adopts your child as his own, the financial responsibility becomes his and the biological father is relieved of said responsibility.

you asked a question and you got some good answers. No reason to be rude. Not sure how it works in Canada but in some states you'd have to be married to him for 2 years before he could adopt your child. In the USA we would go to a lawyer for this info.

no one can adopt your baby unloless the father signs off all his rights- permanently.
