I want my stepdad to adopt me?
Find answers to your legal question.

I want my stepdad to adopt me?

I lived with my grandparent in a another country and they raised me. My dad was around when i was in elementary school and paid for my stuff. Now i'm in USA and i'd like my step dad to adopt me. I live in CA. does it cost a lot of money? I'm 14. Should I have my stepdad adopt me. HE loves me a lot and treat me as his own. I don't have contact with my bio dad now and he doesn't pay anything. I don't want him to treat my grandparents bad or anything as they live with him. He's very hostile person and i really hate him

I'm sorry but, yes, adoption is expensive. There are all kinds of costs involved, lawyers, court fees, counselor's reports and social worker studies. The expense is not as bad as totally private adoptions where the adopting parent is not related to the child, if your Mom married your step-dad more than 2 years ago then there's some savings in the cost, but it costs.

Plus what about your grandparents? Technically, if they're your Dad's parents, by being adopted by your step-dad then you're not related to them anymore. You might not inherit anything from them. To leave you something, they'd have to name you in a Last Will & Testament.

It's a big step and one you shouldn't go into lightly.

Your Biological father has to agree to it. Yes, it is expensive.
My step-dad adopted me. He paid a lot of money for it, and my bio-dad had to agree. It usually takes a year to get it all final and done.
You will have to convince both your dad and stepdad to agree to it. It costs money for both of them.

Your bioDad will have to agree to it...

That's something you should really think about and talk to your step-dad about and if your live with your mother, her as well. I've heard of several step parents adopting their step children as their own when the biological parent was not longer an active participant in that child's life. So yes, its something to consider but you should talk with your parents about it first and see what they think on the subject.
