Each state law is different regarding information that you will receive. So it is difficult to give you specific information on what to do to get started.
1. register with www.isrr.net (not .com which is a paid site)
2. contact the agency or state which you were adopted through to request you non-id information. The agencies information will be more detailed.
3. register with any state run reunion registries.
4. request that the agency/state put a notice in your file requesting your information be passed on to anyone who may come searching for you.
5. register with as many online registries as possible, especially ones that are specific to the state you were adopted in.
Here are a few.

In the US, 4 states are "open" meaning that you can request and receive you original birth certificate. KS, HI, TN, AK
Many states have a confidential intermediary service for a fee, an approved person is granted access to you complete file and makes every attempt to locate and make contact with who you are searching for. If your request is refused, the records as closed and you will not receive any information. This is rare.
Many states are easier to search than others, OH, CA, TX, KY, & NC.
Best of luck in your search |

I have one of my adopted children that contacted her birth mother. I believe she used some kind of an Adopted children agency. If you know where you were adopted, you may contact the Adoption agency in that state to see if they can help. In case you were wondering if she was happy she did the answer is no she isn't. She was very happy at first, ten it turned out she had a 1/2 brother that was worthless and always in Jail/ he does keep in touch with her 1/2 sister, but she has nothing to do with her birth Mother. Her 1/2 sister told her she was lucky she was adopted, because her life was just hell wth their mother. |

if it was a closed adoption you won't get much help there! If you know the state / city you were born in you could start there putting ads in the paper etc. Ask your parents if they remember the names of your birth parents and see what you can get from them. |

Register with reunion resgistries such as http://www.isrr.org, and look for search angels in your area. Also even with a closed adoption the agency should be able to give you non-identifying information, which may be helpful in some way.
There are multiple search and reunion Yahoo Groups, so you may want to join one of them as well
Best of luck! |

It depends on what state you were born in. You can try to get a copy of your original birth certificate from the state, and then start searching from there. Or if you were adopted through an agency you can try to get some information from them, although they usually want money to open your file, and the files don't always have a lot of information that they can release.
Good luck! |

While it may be a closed adoption, if you are 18 you can write the agency for non-identifying information. That can help. Otherwise, list your first name, date of birth, where you were born, the agency involved (or the lawyer if it was not an agency) and anything you know on different registries. If any member of your birthfamily is looking for you, you need that information out there. Most registries cannot legally take your information unless you are over 18. Keep in mind that some states/agencies, actually changed your birth date, but you have to go with what you know.
It is not always a happy ending, but at least if you find them, you won't have to wonder. |
