IL - Infant drops off at Church, Firehouse, etc?
|
This might be a question IL people, Where do infants go that are dropped off at firehouses, churchs, policies stations, where the parents rights are terminated right away. Do those kids go into foster care?

The babies left at Safe Havens are placed into State Custody and generally live with Foster Families.
Each state has a system to meet the federal guidelines for termination of parental rights... It is rarely Instant as the states are obligated to find "relatives" of any child placed permanently. |

They would go to the nearest hospital for evaluation and from there go into foster care. The good things is that being infants/newborns they will generally get adopted quickly. The kids in Nebraska however who are mostly teens being abandoned under this law are a different story.. |

Yes.
But please think about what this means down the road for the baby. This child will be teased because of it and suffer (more than likely) low self-esteem. The baby WILL NEVER have a chance to find out any biological information. EVER. The parent will regret it and never be able to find the child. Any parent who drops their baby off like that will be the lowest of the low in society, so she needs to be prepared to keep this a lifelong secret.
Unfortunately, alot of these "drops" aren't made by the mother. It's done by angry or interfering family members. |

I know in the Aust system the social services try and find the mother. If she doesn't show up after a period time her rights are terminated. They then look at approved people in the local State pool and match the child up.( So calling on the phone and saying "I'll adopt the child" doesn't work.)
Then the Afamily has to keep the clueless media off their door step because this rarely happens and they want the drama. I know of at least 2 children that have been adopted because of abandonment. |

Well it’s much better than being left in the trash, left in the park or on someone front stoop etc. The safe haven laws are meant to keep mothers from just throwing their baby in the rubbish. They do go into FCS but most are probably quickly adopted since in most cases they are infants. The Nebraska thing is people just taking advantage of it and they will be changing it so that its only for babies who are less than 3 or 4 days old. I don’t anything would tease a child over this but if they do well kids will find any reason to tease someone, kids are cruel. |
