If I got approved for adoption...?

how long would it take for the baby to be placed with me? It's a kinship adoption so I was figuring that once the DCF (Department of Children & Family) said yes it shouldn't be that long. I just wanted to know so I could prepare for the baby to come. Thanks!

My wife and I received the phone call from our worker telling us we were approved on the 18th of the month at 11:30 AM. That same day, at 2:30 pm in the afternoon we received a second call from the worker telling us she had learned of an infant at the hospital ready for discharge and would we be interested in acting as her foster parents while the system worked through the process. We had not requested a child that young but we accepted and by 8 pm that night we were checking her out of the hospital and heading to Walmart to buy the things we needed. Over time we were able to adopt her through the foster care "foster to adopt" program.

3.5 hours from approval to placement. Definitely NOT the norm but that is what it was for us the last time.

For you though, if it's a kinship adoption you should know when the baby is coming just by your relatives due date.

you will need to have an adoption homestudy and I don't think DCF does them. If the child is already in foster care then DCF definitely cannot. they have agencies that they work with for that.

We have been told here in CA that following our home study we should expect to be placed with a child sooner than later. The county social worker has said the whole process takes between 3-6 months depending on the type of child you are looking to adopt.

We have already begun to get the nursery ready so that when they come for the home visit we are already done. A friend of mine adopted two children from the county and both were VERY quick. I figure it would be better to be prepared to receive a baby and then wait as opposed to getting a baby and not being ready.

It depends on your state, but if it is a relative who wants to give the baby to you, you don't have to go through DCF. Find an attorney who won't charge you an arm and a leg to draw up the documents and do a private adoption. Much easier is these instances. Then you should be able to bring baby home at birth or as soon as the Judge signs the documents. Good luck.
