If IA feeds the human trafficking industry, should I stop buying any products made in China?

wouldn't the purchase of any chinese made products then support the child labor?

Sunny --

I AM talking about human beings and children here. If it really is about the children and the wrongs that we support over here, then I'm thinking I shouldn't buy anything made in China because, although some places do follow proper guidelines and standards, not all do. I will always wonder if some kid made my belt in his 17th hour of work that day.

In addition to the issues you mention:

1) Medications that are produced in China are not checked nor regulated like those that are produced in the US. Several months ago, recall that several people died and many more were sickened when the Chinese company that produced Heparin for US Baxter added poison to the drug.
"Recent testimony from the Government Accountability Office said that the FDA may only inspect around 7% of foreign drug-making facilities in a given year, and it would take the agency more than 13 years at that rate to inspect all the plants."

2) Children's toys are constantly tainted with lead paint and other poisons that OUR CHILDREN PUT IN THEIR MOUTHS! No regulation on imported toys!

3) Pet food has been tainted with poisons that were responsible for killing numerous pets.

There are NO regulations in these China and similar countries. And they purposely put in ingredients as fillers to reduce cost.

THEY ARE TAKING OUR MONEY AND THEY ARE ******* WITH OUR LIVES......

Purchasing products that are potentially made with child labour does increase the demand for those products, and so should be avoided whenever possible. That's just a basic law of supply and demand.

However, child labour is a somewhat complicated issue, because often an entire family depends on the child's pay for basic survival. Child labour isn't right, but it's also not something that can just be stopped without provisions in place to replace the lost income... or the child who was prevented from working, and possibly the whole family, may die of starvation or lack of shelter.

While I do support efforts against child labour, child labour isn't an issue that exists in a vacuum, and a simultaneous effort needs to be made against poverty and lack of family support in the developing world.

I agree--human trafficking comes in many forms and child labor is right there with the wrongs done to children including IA.

I try to do my part. It's difficult. Many products can be manufactured by oppressed people and/or children. I try to buy American, and always look for the union label, but sometimes we cannot be sure that the materials needed to manufacture an item in America or by union workers were not manufactured by mistreated workers. I just try and let my conscience be my guide.

I would suggest stop purchasing babies from the multi-billion dollar business so they will be forced to address the issue. Try sponsoring the natural parents, children and communities.

Get involved with NGO's that are trying to stop human trafficking not make their jobs more difficult by ignoring atrocities and sweeping them under the rug.

Many people that are fully aware of the child labor problems and care avoid buying products from any business that allows it. I would advise anyone to do more research.

That's your choice in what you choose to buy in a department or grocery store, online, wherever and wherever the products come from. I live in the land of Mardi Gras..and after watching a documentary about 'Mardi Gras Beads' (manufactured in China), I CHOSE not to ever buy Mardi Gras Beads again (WAHHH! I love Mardi Gras Beads). Is very difficult not to buy from China..since our Corporate Nation has sold out it's manufacturing base to the lowest bidder. SO as little signifigance as my choice not to buy Mardi Gras Beads may be to others...it's my little way of saying...no more!

Now do I compare Beads to Babies...no not exactly...but then...both are a 'commodity' for 'purchase', yes/no?

If you feel convicted about it, then you should probably stop purchasing items you feel may have exploited children.

I am glad you brought this up, It's an important issue.

Boycott whomever you want, but don't buy babies ever.

Simple.

My father came here as a teenage war refugee and was taken in (but not adopted, because of documentation problems) by distant relatives. He'll say both international adoption and goods made overseas can be ok. He's been back home and a factory there is paying ten dollars a week to its employees which is twice what they get anywhere else. It's a shame, but people are eager to get those jobs. Until there's a better answer that is being implemented, merely taking away the bandaids isn't going to improve anyone's situation.

If you are concerned about child labor you should not only refrain from products made in China, but any third world country. Buy sweat-free and union-made products. And don't be fooled- just because it says "Made in US" doesn't mean that sweatshops weren't involved.

We avoid buying products made in China due to child labor and poor regulations, but it seems it is getting nearly impossible to find products not made in China at least partially! Very Frustrating.

TBH I DO try to avoid many Chinese made things (where possible, getting more and more difficult these days) as I detest the fact they are made by child labourers and people deprived of their rights... I hate the fact China is used by the rest of the world to get more of what they WANT.

I know not all items in China are made in this fashion but yeah, I do usually check the tag to see where an item is made before purchasing.

Yeah, you're right, because widgets at Wal-Mart are the same as human beings...

Connecting human trafficking of babies for infertile couples to adopt and chinese made products manufactured by children in sweatshops doesn't make sense. Yes, human trafficking should be stopped. Yes, child labor should be stopped.

If your conscience is telling you not to buy chinese products...don't buy them.
If your conscience is telling you not to adopt internationally...don't do it.

But please don't compare the two so casually. They are both completely different, serious issues. As an interntational adoptee I don't appreciate being compared to "widgets at walmart" as Sunny put it.
