If a child dies because of an accident...?

do you think the APs should be allowed to adopt again? This article was in the paper last week:

http://hamptonroads.com/2009/03/fatal-distraction

What kind of effect did this have in the IA community?

Is Balfour correct by saying a private adoption would be legal for the Harrisons?

Personally, I have mixed feelings on this. I am interested in what other people think.

If a child does because of an accident should Birth parents be able to have other kids?? It's the SAME THING!

A very tragic accident for sure but I honestly feel that he should be judged as a parent, not as an adoptive parent. If someone can say here that ANY parent should somehow be banned from having other children because of an accident like this then I could agree with them but to single him out because the child was adopted is not fair. That child's life is not worth any more or any less then any other child's life because he was adopted and therefore that parent shouldn't be judged any differently either.

Sorry - but how does any parent effing forget that their child is in their car?

No, these APs are not fit to be parents. Nor are biological parents who do the same thing. None of them should ever be allowed to have children in their care again. It is a symptom of extreme egocentricity that has been shown again and again to be the root of child abuse and neglect.

Independ"ant"
No they shouldn't. Adoption isn't a "right" and for whatever reason they have proven to be beyond unfit.

He killed his achild....intentionally or not.

This was a horrifying tragedy, but I believe it was an accident and not a crime. I believe the jury made the right decision in finding him not guilty. There was no intent here.

As a mom of 2, I sometimes do have a hard time understanding how anyone could forget about their child, however, I now know of several excellent moms who have in fact forgotten about their kids in the car, Luckily, they remembered before anything terrible happened, but they simply did forget. Our brains are wired for routine and when something breaks from the routine, terrible, terrible mistakes can occur. From what I have read here, Harrison was an excellent father and will be tortured by what happened for the rest of his life.

I don't believe this will have any effect in the IA community, as what happened is not an adoption issue. The fact that dad forgot his son in the car had nothing to do with him being adopted. Sadly, this is something that has happened many times and probbaly will happen again.

As the Harrisons were not convicted of any crime, then yes, they could adopt again. Personally, I would hope that the Harrison's received extensive counselling over their grief and guilt before even considering adopting again. If they did that, then personally I would not have an issue with them adopting again. Though from the depth of his grief and his guilt, I highly doubt they would adopt again. Or at least not for a long time.

An accident is something avoidable. If any of my children (God forbid) were killed in a car accident, I would be able to adopt again (but likely would not want to).

If I left my child to rot in the heat, that is not an accident, it is negligence. Likely anyone can do private adoption, which is why PRIVATE ADOPTION should not exist and should have to be approved by social services.

I live in an area of the US where summer temperatures are dangerous. Leaving a child or a pet in a closed car for even a few minutes can be fatal. Cases like this happen every year, either fatalities or near-fatalities. There doesn't seem to be any pattern or stereotype for the parents. They can be young parents or older, college educated or not, single or married.

I have no idea how someone can just forget a child in a car. But I read enough stories in the local news to just dismiss it out of hand. Still, there is a level of negligance involved in cases like this.

Criminal negligance leading to the death of a child should preclude someone from adopting, in my opinion.

A child dying in an accident where the APs had no control over the situation, should not.

no,no,no and no if you ca'nt look after them ,should'nt have them.
leaving a child in a hot car in the middle of summer is not an accident!!!

I don't think a person should be allowed to adopt who has left his child in a hot car. There are certainly other "accidents" where no one is at fault, and then I think adoption should be allowed. I'm sure nearly every parent who has lost a child in this way is punished more than we can imagine, but it is so incredibly sad to think it happens fairly regularly.

Not in a case like this, nor do I think a bio parent should be able to have another child after something like this.

Children should always be our #1 thing to look after. Gone are the days when mothers can be at home with their children during the day (I'm so lucky to be able to), and people are on the go with too much stress these days.

I do feel sorry for the AP's, however, mistakes like this just can't be allowed to possibly happen again, only in a different way. The true tradegy here though, is the horrid death that poor baby suffered, and why didn't anyone help this baby, and just break into the car.

Rowan
Grape, i agree. How do you forget your child!? This sort of thing occured in the town i live in. A man and their 4 kids went to church, then home after they went shopping i believe. The wife got the other kids and asked her husband to grab the toddler out of her car seat, and the bags. He grabbed the bags, and left his daughter in the van, where she was found three hours later. The wife assumed her husband had taken the kid in for a nap, and never checked. The baby was 15 months old. No 15 month old i know sleeps three hours straight. No mother i know would go that long without checking on the baby.

When it involved the death of a child, i have no sympathy except for the child and the siblings.

cantstopLinnyG
No, I do not.

Unfortunately, there have been 2 cases where I live of women leaving their children in a car for more than 6 hours, and the babies died.

To add insult to injury, these women were NOT charged. Not even child endangering or neglect, and it made most of our city sick to our stomachs. The fact they were not charged is beyond comprehensible to most citizens here. Truth of the matter is that both "mothers" were college educated with high paying administrative jobs in our local school districts. One was a school psychologist!! Most of the city believes if the woman had been uneducated or of a different race, charges would have been brought against them.

I believe ap's should be held to higher standards. Sorry, but I do. They were selected by an agency or attorney and they are supposed give someone else's child a "better life". That better life does not include death by baking in a car, or any other fashion which could have been prevented by the parent.

Balfour may say a private adoption may be legal, but it's highly doubtful. The risk is just too high. If it happened again to another child, can you just imagine the lawsuits brought against an agency would give a child to him? They should not be permitted to adopt again, and I doubt they will.
