If my husband is from the UK and Im from the us, where do we do the adoption process so he can adopt my child?

Ive heard that in the uk I would have to give up my child and then we would have to adopt her together. I would rather not do that because i dont want to give her up for any amount of time. Is it possible that we can go through the adoption process in the us? We will most likely end up living in the uk but I like the us process of adoption of a stepchild much better. Additional Details I should mention that her birth father is not in the picture at all. As in he doesnt know about her and he isnt on the birth certificate.

In the UK you don't have to relinquish your child and then re-adopt - how ridiculous! whomever told you that is mistaken.
A family solicitor would deal with the paperwork. They usually offer an initial consulation at no charge. The Court fee is around £140.
If you are all US citizens, it would be easier to do it in the States though. Although the child's original birth certificate is likely to be sealed and secret forever, unlike the UK where every citizen has access to their own original birth record whether they're adopted or not. |

The biggest problem with the USA - in most states - once an adoption goes through a new (false) birth certificate is issued saying that the adoptive parents gave birth to the child - and the original gets sealed away for EVER.
Every child should have their truth - as we are all made up of the genetics of those that made us.
You may not think it's important - but it's not about you - it's about your daughter.
You may not think much of her bio father - but he is part of her.
Just be very aware of the future. You may not stay with you husband forever - but your daughter will always be your daughter.
In the UK - once turning 18 - adoption records are open to the adoptee.
Although if she was born in the US - things will be messy all around.
Please make sure you have copies of all her original documents for when she grows up.
They're important to adoptees. |

I would do it in the US, but please keep copies of the original birth documents. There may be medical history on her biological dad that she needs, and can get through those records. |

"As in he doesnt know about her and he isnt on the birth certificate."
wow. i hope you plan to be truthful about your husband not being her father. you're in for a heap of trouble if you lie to her. |

If you are currently living in the US then that is where the adoption has to be done. If it's done in the US then it will still have effect when you move of course. You can only do it in the UK once you move there. Cases like this are normally decided upon based on the country of residence which in your case is the US (till you move). |
