If someone wanted to give you money to adopt a child...?

Nope. There is no amount of money in the world that would make adoption acceptable to me, especially if it was typical "stranger" adoption.

If I had a family member who could not take care of their child, I would gladly take care of the child for as long as they needed, and as long as the child would be an active part of their lives.

Well, since many departments of social services have financial supports for the children adopted through them, and they continue to offer that money till the adopted child is 18, I wouldn't go so far as to say it's "illegal" as others have but I do think that when it happens in a private adoption there are all sorts of red flags.

If someone has the money to help support the person(s) who adopted their child then what reason would they have for placing that child for adoption in the first place?

This is not going to be a popular answer, but it's truthful. Ten years ago we were allowed to deduct the adoption fee as a charitable donation. This reduced our Federal tax by around $3,000.

Did we take the deduction? Yes, we did.

no. typically, if you adopt a newborn that baby already has someone who loves them. i couldn't bear the thought of raising a child knowing that i took part in dramatically altering their life for the worse, no matter how much love i gave them or how well i took care of them.

I'd feel honored and love the opportunity to adopt again, but I'd never accept money for it.

No, I don't think I would feel right doing so, even if the person was totally willing and there were no strings attached (plus I think there are much better uses for someone's money than giving it to me... like giving it to a charity that helps actual poor people.)

There's more to adoptive parenting than just having money-- you have to have the emotional resources, and I don't have that for increasing my family at present-- and even in terms of money, there's a lot more required than just the first year. I would need to look at my own finances and make sure I could provide for the child myself until age 18+, not make the commitment and be stuck without sufficient income after the provided year ended. Making the decision to adopt based on temporary financial help would be irresponsible, because it's a promise you make to the child in the long term.

That's not to say I will never add to my family through adoption... I most likely will, via US foster care. But I would have to be ready, and right now I'm not. That won't change just because someone wanted to give me money for a year.

There's a LOT more to being a parent than just having someone drop some cash on me, you know? And I'd have to think it all through very carefully. It's not a quick decision, or one to make lightly.

No. I'd ask them to invest that money in a worthwhile charity.

I can't be paid to be a parent to a child and I would not pay for a child either no matter how much it cost.

Children are people, not commodities or pets. You should know, you were a child once too.

No way, if I adopted it would because I wanted to provide a safe, loving home for a child. Children have a right to be loved and raised in a caring home.

yes I would love to adopt but would never be able to afford it. I've always wanted to adopt a child from Russia.

my husband and i have been wanting to adopt for a while now. we've had 4 miscarriages but even before that we've wanted to. adoption is VERY expensive. but i'm still not sure that i would except money from someone to help us unless it was family and friends. but if it's someone that doesn't want to adopt and you think money will help change their mind then that's a different story. someone has to have love for the child not love for the money in order to be an adoptive parent. but if it is someone that wants to and can't afford it then i would if it were the government or my family or friends that were trying to help me out.
