If states continue the safe have "no questions asked" policy?

do you think they should at least require counseling so parents know all of their options to keep their children and they know just what they are getting into?

I am against the law too. I just think if more people knew how permanant it was, they may think twice.

Unfortunately, it defeats the original intention of the safe haven laws. If parents were really interested in hearing that sort of counseling, then they would have chosen relinquishment through social services or adoption agencies. These laws are supposed to be the alternative to dumping in the trash or what have you.

And for the record I don't agree with these laws. So bring on the thumbing, lol.

the problem is, the point of it is anonymity. the very serious issue that results from this, is no medical history...

that child will have virtually ZERO chances of ever finding their family.

imo, it makes it even harder than black market adoption.

No one disputes that the safe haven laws are better than dumping a newborn into a dumpster to die a horrible death.

However, the total anonymity inherent in the safe haven laws is so completely wide open for misuse/abuse. How can anyone be sure that it is the actual parents relinquishing the child? And do adoptees have NO rights? Are we, as a society, willing to accept that adoptees deserve no legal recourse to their own information?

personally i'm happy for the law. when i gave birth at the hospital, i had no adoptive parents lined up or anything like that. i talked to a social worker about the safe haven law and once my baby was placed in their car, she went about seeking out adoptive parents that have been waiting on a child.

granted it's not perfect i've heard of some people dumping their teens off, but for people like me, it's a blessing to have some where to go and someone to help you with everything.

Personally, I think the laws should be amended requiring a saliva sample taken from the person giving up the baby through safe haven to verify that it is HER baby to give up.

But, no, according to the stats my boyfriend read, that most of those giving up babies through safe havens are over 20. You'd have to be pretty blatantly stupid (or unable to speak or understand English) to not know that there is help. Many states report that the number of abandoned babies have been cut in half since implementation of Safe Haven laws.

What you aren't aware of, however, is that parents or relatives do and can come forward and reclaim the baby. According to an article, in NJ, out of 33 Safe Haven babies, 14 are now being raised by their parent or a relative who came forward.
