If you adopt a child, will their relatives become related to you?
Find answers to your legal question.

If you adopt a child, will their relatives become related to you?

For example, if I were to adopt a child with a brother, would their brother become my nephew?

Uh, no?

If "A" is the adoptee then you would be A's mother. If you were A's mother then A's brother would be your... nothing. Unless you adopted the brother too then he would also be your son.

A nephew would be your own brother or sister's child. Not your child's brother.

No they don’t. If you adopt a child legally their natural family does not become your family at least not technically. Certainly if one has a very open adoption with the natural family it could get to the point where the adoptive family and natural family consider each other extended honoree family.

No. But it would be nice if more people looked at it that way!

If both children are up for adoption, generally they go together, so the brother would be considered your child also.

When kids are up for adoption, they really do not have anybody.

No.

I feel as though my son's natural family is part of mine now. I don't know how they feel about me, but I do know that I love my son with all of my heart and since his natural family is a big part of who he is, I feel that they are as important to me as they are to him.

But, through a legal standpoint, no.

You know i understand all the legal side of it, you know the terminating of rights etc.

Legally all ties are severed.

To me and my husband we look at only that they gave up the right to raise our children, and parent them, not be eradicated from their life.

BUT when it comes to relationships I still feel my kids have more than two sets of grandparents in the world. (Who don't know they exist and I can do nothing about it at this point in time. Maybe that will change as they grow older, and ask the Nparents that's them.)

More than one mother and father... somethings the legal system can't deal children'sthats the nature of hothat'sends and bonds are formed. If one day we meet the rest of my childrens extended family than thats how I see them...extended family.

legally no that childs brother legally is no longer their brother.

C Wood
Not really. Your adopted child becomes your child by law, that doesn't make his brothers or cousins any kind of relation to you.

well usually when you adopt, the child either has absolutely nobody.
or the child has a sibling, in this case they usually like to be adopted together and not separated

Technically (as in legally)- no.

On the other hand, family is what you make of it. There is no reason why you should not have "familial" relationships with the biological family.

My brothers have a biological brother who was adopted to another family. (Actually, they have mulitple biological siblings out there, but only one we still have contact with.) Their brother is not my brother, but he's not totally unrelated either. It's sort of weird to try to explain, but there is a connection.

Legally no. When you adopt a child all of their relative are no longer legally related to them. If you adopt a child with a brother, once the adoption is final, the child no longer legally has a brother.

In my case, my daughter's birthmom calls my sons her nephews and they call her "Aunt A______" However that is just because we chose to let her stay a part of her daughter's life. We could legally at any time cut off any and all communications (we wouldn't but we could). Legally she has no connection ot the child she gave birth to. Legally I am the child's mother, not her.
