If you were adopted and your birth name was changed is it possible to get your original birth certificate.?

Short answer: Only if you live in Alaska, Oregon, Kansas, Alabama, New Hampshire or Maine. Otherwise you have no legal right to your own documents, and will have to skirt the law if you ever expect to get them.

I did a search, found my mother, and talked to her on the phone several times. I've still never seen my own birth certificate.

In America there is only a handful of states where an adopted person may now have access to his/her OBC, without a court order. All adoption records are sealed, including the OBC. In those majority of states where the laws have not been changed...an adopted person cannot merely go down to state and/or county Vital Records and obtain his/her OBC. You would have to go to court and show 'cause' as to why you should have your OBC. Then it is up to the judge if he/she feels your 'cause' is worthy and just to give you access to your OBC! If you live in America, check your state adoption laws regarding original birth certificates.

That depends on your state laws. My state for example, seals the record forever, or until, obvious laws are overturned. I was fortunate enough to scan a copy of my daughters's prior to the changes that were made. If I could offer any AP advice, it would be to be proactive and inquisitive and make copies of everything you can get your hands on. I also have my daughter's bio mother's hospital records full and in detail of her birthing.

I kept these for my daughter for obvious reasons. I understand it is not always possible, however.

Depends on when and where you were born AND when and where you were adopted. For instance, Massachusetts allows you to get a copy of your OBC if you were born/adopted before one date OR after another. Anyone in between needs a court order.

No. Your original birth certificate is now, by law, the one with your new name on it.

For some there will never be a way to even find out their real name or where they are really from. Child trafficking is predominant in international adoption.

when I adopted my daughter, the birth mother kept the original, and when her named was changed i got mine. so I guess its possible.

I would ask an adoption lawyer for your state to find out

Christina
Yes, I have a copy of mine.

Go to your local Health Department. They should be able to help.
