I'm doing a persuasive research essay on adoption.I'm arguing that after a child is adopted they should checked up on anually.

I think it would be a good thing to check on children after the adoption is completed. Perhaps 1 year down the track - or 5 years even.
I'm not sure about anually.
I think adoptive parents should be held to a higher standard - as adoptees have already had a very rough start to life - being taken or given away by their first family.
I know too many adoptees that are now adults that had horrible adoptive families to live with. (alcoholic parents, abuse etc)
These kids need to BEST - second time around.
It's terribly sad that they didn't have it the first time around - but sadly that just doesn't always happen. |

What I want to know is who is giving all these people thumbs down?
They all have valid, and true, points. If a crack addicted mother gives birth to a baby and passes that addiction on to her child, what happens? Social Services takes the baby away from her until she gets cleaned up enough to take it back. That's that. No supervision afterwards and apparently everyone thinks that's okay. Now if the mother never cleans her act up and loses parental rights and the foster parents get to adopt the foster parents should forever be monitored? How fair is that? If it were their biological child this wouldn't be an issue.
If this is the case, than I agree that all parents, adoptive, foster, biological should be checked up on annually to ensure that everyone is raising their children correctly. Of course, they will be most likely monitored by Social Workers who have no children of their own and may not know the first thing about parenting.
If you have something to say, say it. Don't just mark thumbs down on perfectly good opinions that have valid reasoning. |

I don't know about Ohio, but most adoption cases in California are checked up on for the first 6 months. |

There are follow up visits by a social worker after the adoption is completed, but I think the number of visits is variable by state and/or agency.
Our adoption had three post-placement visits by a social worker (at three months, six months and a year) but we're required to send annual updates (letter and pictures) to the agency until the children turn 18.
I'm not sure what Ohio's laws are, specifically. But if you're thesis is that every adoption needs annual visits until the child is 18, that sounds very expensive. |

I just want to say that it really upset me that you would want a child adopted to be checked up annually. Haven't adoptive parnets been through enough trying to conceive and the heartbreak of it all. Then we have to be grill to the tee and tested up the ying-yang. Have numerous reference. I'm an Labor nurse and I can tell you all my drug addicted patients don't get check up they test postive and the state won't even check on the baby. Now I'm a good mother, good job, loving family, lots of patience, and you want to check up on me every year. That is unjust and unethical in my opinion. I can tell you my son would not be where he is developmentally if he was with his birthmom or doing as well as he is. He is 4 years old and has ADHD and high functioning austism. |

In our case, post-placement visits occurred every four months until the adoption was finalized. Once the adoption was finalized, no further involvement with the agency was necessary, except for us to provide the agency with pictures/letters on a yearly basis for our son's birth family. We chose to open our adoption even further by allowing visits, phone calls, etc., with our son's bio grandparents.
With regards to checking on the child annually, I'm not sure that I support that. Should adoptive parents be held to a higher parenting standard than people who give birth to their children? I can't get my arms around that idea. |

We had post placement supervision every 30 days until the adoptions were finalized.
After that adoptive parents have the same supervision Any other parent has...If something is wrong people report it--or the family has a situation where they need to stay in touch with DHS because of the child's needs....
Just like any other parent Adoptive Parents are not "watched" any more closely....
We should check up on all Children and their Parents Annually--maybe fewer of them would end up in Foster Care after a long time living abused and neglected. |

Ohio Law requires monthly checks, SW and DR. until the adoption is finalized. After that there is no further interference in your life by the state. |
