actually, it would be better if there was more race matching.

i will share the story of an african-american male adopted man i dated. his well meaning caucasian parents adopted him believing their love and understanding would cancel out the race factor. he was considered too white by the black minority where he grew up. he was considered too black by the white majority where he grew up. (this was a liberal, open-minded community) and though his parents tried to be color blind and provide a color blind world view for him, the truth was his world was color focused. because even if there is no hatred and the society is accepting, the fact is that people still address and relate to people of color differently. it wasn’t until he was in high school where some african american sisters took pity on him and helped TEACH him how to fit in better as an african american male - that's right - he had to get lessons in being black - that he began to stop feeling like an alien. all of which was to the detriment of his place in white society and to his relationship with his adoptive family, both of which he rejected to be more fully black. he spent his adult life as a handicapped black person and very angry over having been put in this avoidable situation, and it wasn’t until a nervous breakdown that he finally came to terms with his adoption and forgave his parents.

this whole notion that race doesn't matter and love is all you need is a nice idea if you're a white adoptive parent. but it's us kids who have to deal with the racism, not you.

eta: most of us grew up in the REAL WORLD, not the surreal sheltered, nanny watched, silver spoon world of celebrity fortresses. the world where parent cultural appropriation just adds fuel to the fire of ridicule.

Yes. But most children placed for adoption are NOT unwanted.

IDK!!
In general, In America, there are more white people looking to adopt and some tend to want children that would pass as their own.

Well the majority of people adopting are white and the mojority are doing it because they can't have or want a child of their own. Then they want to have a baby that looks like them so yes more people want a white child

Desire may not be part of the issue. In many areas, black babies are often restricted to being adopted only by black or mixed-race couples until they are at a certain age. There are far fewer black or mixed-race couples adopting ANY babies than Caucasian couples. My state laws give same-race preference.

yeahright
Funny you should ask...

You can go into some agencies and search the prospective adoptive parents that have profiles for their acceptance of various ethnic backgrounds. I just went into one of the larger ones based on your question--

Out of 160 sets of parents, 16 were open to AA and bi-racial children. I was actually very surprised that so few were.

None of my adoptions have been of a Caucasian baby (which my wife and I are) so while I'm sure it's that way for some people it certainly isn't that way for everyone.

For those that do feel that way I'm comfortable with letting them make their own choices as to the race of any children they may wish to adopt and if that means that they have to wait years then thats their choice. It's not my personal choice but only those people know what they feel will work best for their family.

blahblahblah
It is no secret that white babies are in more demand than black babies. I think most parents prefer a baby the same race as them. I agree that all babies deserve a loving home but in the real world it is not that easy.

It is very sad, but true that the majority of PAP's are hoping to adopt a caucasian child. My husband and I are currently in the process and are one of only a handful of PAP's open to any ethnicity/race. Some very unethical agencies actually will charge more for a caucasian baby than a baby of color. PATHETIC!

Most people adopt within their own race so that they can pass them off as their own.

Its a personal choice. Nobody should adopt a different race if they are not comfortable with it. How are you going to create the most loveing home possible if your not comfortable right off the bat. Personally I am white my oldest is native american my middle is jamacan and my youngest is white. I am not specific about race with the kids I foster and adopt! I love them all!

I would pick any. I'm white, but I might want a black because I could have a white baby. I dont really care though. In many adoption places in other countries you can't choose who you adopt.

I don't think that this has alot to do with racism. It's just my assumption that some caucasions are more likely to feel that even though they may be infertile they are entitled to have a child and are more likely to pay for one. It just makes since to have a baby that looks like you. Most minorities are not exactly plagued with the burden of infertility and are able to produce kids without the needs of multiple rounds of fertility drugs or years of trying. therefore the demand for minority babies is not so great.
