In regard to adoption: What do you think of this quote?

"An unexamined life is not worth living."
-- Socrates

Yes, I know that Socrates was not referring to adoption when he said this...But I was applying it to modern adoption. Sigh.

That is one of my favorite quotes.

As for adoption, here is my take:

Adopters or potential adopters: Ask why you want to adopt, or examine why you did adopt. Hopefully adopters will come to the conclusion that they participated in an inhumane practice. Hopefully potential adopters will decide not to participate in the legalized identity theft industry.

Abandoners: Ask yourself, did you really not have a choice? Really, there was nothing you could do to raise your child? Be honest. Quit playing victim, unless you truly were a victim. And even then realize that your child lost far more than you did.

Abandonees:
Those in reunion or searching- well I'll leave this one mostly alone, except to say quit using "birth mother" eliminate all that birth crap from your vocabulary, and start living in reality. Your mother abandoned you. YOUR MOTHER.

To those who are happy-dappy and consider their adopters their only family and don't need to search - Do you believe in the Tooth Fairy as well? Grow up. You didn't sign any papers, you were an innocent. Your adopters don't own you. Get out of fantasy land and start living a real life.

I often feel sorry for people who have no inner dialogue with themselves. I have grown more from examining my own past that I ever could have from simply living one day to the next with no thought of who I "used" to be. That includes my historical past and genetic past. I am the sum of my parts and my parts include the people who came before me and provided my genetic make up. While examining myself I have also examined those who's DNA I share. Maturing and growing are ongoing processes. Who I am now is not who I was 5 years ago, nor who I will be 5 years from now. I shudder to think of who I would be if I hadn't been given the opportunity to see my own face and mind reflected in those around me. I imagine I would be a very unstable person. Sharing history, blood, mannerisms and features with other people has shown me a small part of how others see me from the outside, that is the greatest gift reunion has given me; the chance to examine myself from an outsiders perceptive by examining my relatives.

I can also see how it applies to one's adoption experience. It is hard to know which direction to go in life if we don't know where we came from.

It's perfectly natural and appropriate to want to understand the truth of one's origin.

Or what happened to our child that we loved and birthed..

Socrates would have great respect for those who seek their truth.

I can see how it would apply. One cannot move forward without first examining what brought them this far in the first place. Without the past, there is no point of reference and nothing to build upon.

Introspection is a cornerstone of awareness and growth. Those who question should seek their answers. Those who accept without question should live in their own peace.

In regard to adoption, I think its an awesome quote.

I think its very important for everyone involved to examine all aspects of the life of the child and the birth parents in order to make the best possible decision for tht child.

Even if adoption was not the case, I think everyone should make it a practice to examine their lives to make sure it does not harm any other living person. If you find selfish or inconsiderate actions, then the person should make steps to correct these behaviors. This is the only way to truly find happiness.

I agree that before you can figure out where to go, you have to look back at the past.

My adoption was so confusing and many bits of my life were hidden from me, it was hard to know what bits were real and what bits were lies. When you get glimmers it's like you find a puzzle piece, but it's still useless because it has nothing else to relate to.

And the person above's aviator looks just like mine (spoooky)

that quote isn't in regard to adoption, it's in regard to questioning one's self and beliefs.

Socrates would rather die than give up philosophy and live an unquestioning life.
