Infant adoption?

Has anyone adopted a newborn with Down Syndrome? Our caseworker has asked what we are open too.

My hubbysaid yes right away. He has an uncle who has Down Syndrome so he understands what type of care is involved. For five years in my twenties I worked with disabled children.
So I am well aware these children have varying degrees of abilities. And there may be some unknowns.

I am doing my homework and I am curious as to what your persoanl experience has been with the adoption of a special needs child.

I plan on adopting a DS child and had submitted my paperwork on one before. The reason we couldn't continue trying for baby was that the baby needed heart surgery right after the birth (common as i'm sure you know) and our insurance didn't cover it. That seems to be the biggest obstacle is working with the insurance companies.
We ended up adopting a blind child. She was 5 months old and on Adoptuskids.com. Her fee's were reduced to $3500 not including HS, post visits, and legal. Everything has been going great. We were able to get her all the services she needed like teachers and OT right away. No one has cared that the adoption isn't final yet. There are yahoo groups for people that adopt DS children. The groups have been a big help for me. Good luck!

We were looking at a little boy on adoptuskids.com with DS, but by the time we submitted our Home study he already placed! When you adopt disabled kids there are lost and lost or resources that open up to help you get them all the extra medical care they may need! Sometimes you can get Medicaid long term for the child too! We always keep our hearts and minds open to any child no matter the disability! We have a child now that we are not sure what is wrong with her. She is almost 2 and can't stand unsupported or walk, and she does not speak. Even with the extra effort caring for her requires so is just a joy and a delight and she has stolen our heart! Good luck to you and your husband!!
