Is adoption a bad thing to society?

Lillie
Well that depends.

If you are someone who wants a kid, then it's a good thing.

If you are a pregnant woman who doesn't have adequate support, who is maybe young, or single, or poor, or lacks resources, then it's a bad thing - people use that against you to talk you into giving your baby away to someone more "deserving".

I for one would rather see society helping families to stay together...but hey, that's just me, I'm sure many will disagree with that one because, hey, there are poor pathetic infertiles out there just DYING to get their hands on a kid.

Adoption as it was meant to be is not a bad thing, but as with anything else in society you ad money to the mix and it brings out the greed in people. My feeling is no one should be making a profit off of the innocent.

This is a very difficult question.

In an ideal society, there would be no need for adoption, because all children would be born into situations where their parents could provide loving homes and keep them forever.

Unfortunately, we do not live in an ideal society. There are children without parents for many reasons.....poverty, drugs, political conditions, etc. These children need to be raised in loving homes. So the next best thing to "no adoptions needed" would be "children who need parents are adopted by loving families."

Again, we do not even get the "next best thing" sometimes. There are families who cannot have biological children, who will only consider adopting a healthy newborn child, and have to fight fifty other couples to find one. This is indeed a "bad thing" to society, because it treats children as commodities rather than human beings. This is the point at which the needs of the parent supercede the needs of the child, and adoption should NEVER serve this purpose.

Not when children who NEED homes are able to find them (assuming those homes are GOOD homes, and that the people in those homes are willing and able to support the many and varied needs of a hurting child).

Unfortunately, most adoptions in the USA right now are not serving the purpose of finding good homes for children who need them. Adoption currently serves the purpose of fulfilling adults desire for a baby (usually healthy, white, and newborn). So, no, adoption is not a good thing for society.

If by "adoption" we could, as a society, say that we are talking exclusively about the scenario in my first paragraph, then I'd say it is a good thing. But since the vast majority of adoptions don't serve the best interests of the child, I can't say that adoption, as a whole, is a good thing for society.

im adopted! Where do you want children in foster homes, on the streets. come on

Hmmmm what a question. You are of course not asking if Adoptees are a bad thing to society - RIGHT ?

Are you infact saying that it causes huge emotional and financial problems for the people who are part of society ?

I mean if you wanted to look at it from this pov it certainly keeps a lot of people in jobs doesnt it ... I mean adoption is one huge money making machine, for the mother who gave up her child that needs therapy, for the child given up who needs therapy, for the adoptive parents who have to fork out 20-50 grand, to the adoption agencies raking it in, to the attorneys raking it in...yep it certainly provides a lot of jobs..

But family preservation could provide just as many jobs, but not as much profit.

In regards to this comment

'No, it is an answer for a society who cannot have children"

Whoa what a very naive thing to say! It is NOT a answer for society who cannot have children...that is acutally the most absurd thing i have read on here.

Again the smack of entitlement *rolls eyes*

Adoption is a good thing for Orphans and for children in abusive homes....
Adoption is NOT a good thing for an alternative to birth control which apparently seems to the going thing !

No, adoption is not a bad thing in society. Providing homes and families for children who have none or who cannot be raised by their own families results in strengthening the likelihood of success for those children in general. That ultimately benefits society as a whole. However, the way adoption is currently done in this country does not benefit the child overall. White, single mothers are harangued to give up their babies (even wanted babies) to provide babies for couples who can't have children. Adult adoptees are denied any access to their history. Foster children are moved from home to home and kept in foster care for a decade or more. In many places, if the foster family applies to adopt the child, the kid is removed from the home.

Adoption that is done wrongly in any fashion is not good for society or any society. If the adoption is done completely right with all the t’s crossed and I’s doted and there was no funny play. Then it’s a good think for society and kids because the other alternative would be Foster Care System. Let alone that is no place for a child to grow up , plus it costs the state money to care for the kids in FCS so they want to get them out of there if they can be adopted. There are some in the system who are not available for adoption. Or reverted back to the old fashioned Orphanages which a lot of countries still used Orphanages. An orphanages is also no place for a child to grow up.

There are always going to be people who are unfit to be parents, there are a lot of people in this world who should not be parents period regardless if its their biological child(ren) or adopted kid(s). There will always be people who will not have natural family willing or able to take them in.

In the society we live in right now yes. There are alot of children who need homes and lots of capable loving adults willing to give them.

And adoption itself isn't even the problem, its other social issues such as ,drinking, drug abuse, unsupervised teens, broken homes, poor role models, poverty, irresponsibility and more that cause the problem of children without homes. It is a result of all of theses things, that adoption is around. So Adoption itself is a good thing. Its the answer to the problem that has been presented. I would say all the former things are what is bad for society. You can't just treat the symptom you need to solve the original problem and the symptoms will resolve itself. So all in all Adoption is a great thing involving great children and great AP and is absolutely not a bad thing at all.

Just as with all things in life, there are good and bad aspects to adoption. Adoption is good for children who need homes or who are in abusive situations. Adoption is bad when it is chosen for the wrong reasons or there is coercion involved with the process. As long as adoption is done in the best interest of the child, it is a good thing. Whenever a child is not held at the center of the process, then it is a bad thing.

No, adoption is a wonderful thing. My best friend and my brother in law were adopted. If they hadn't been, my best friend would have grown up in an Korean orphanage, and my brother in law would be living in Arizona.

here is just one more question that makes me wonder why I even come back to this adoption site on yahoo answers. What is SO wrong about adoption? I am not in denial to think that every adoption is great- however when a question is asked is it bad for society- it almost makes it sound like it is something criminal, to not be able to have children, and want one- or if you are a birth mother, it makes you out to be a criminal for placing your child for adoption. Abortion is a bad thing for society, due to the fact that 4,000 innocent lives are taken a day in America alone- that is the question that should be asked. Would it be better if the mom knows for sure that she could not raise her child, to abort the child, because adoption is a bad thing? Come on now!!

hmc
I cant believe your asking this type of question! its like asking are you a bad thing to society. you are if you have to ask a question like that. You are going to make alot of people on here angry.

Stephanie J
No, it is an answer for a society who cannot have children. Or for people who cannot care for there children. It is a blessing in disguise
