I'm single and considering adopting a child and would like input from anyone who has adopted as a single person or was adopted by a single person. I'm really considering adopting a child (around 8ish in age) but Im concerned on the effects of adopting a child without a father in the home. Not only that but my family isn't supportive of my decision, but then again their never supportive with anything that doesn't benefit them. Even with these obstacles, theres something in my heart that says Im suppose to do this. I'm 29 years old and I will eventually have my own children once I get married, so is it more appropriate to wait til I get married to adopt as well? I just see so many children in need and it breaks my heart, especially when I know I can help. I'd be grateful for any advice. Thank You

There are things about adopting that would be easier as a couple and if your family was supportive of your choice. Frankly, I think the family will come around. And while, you may not have anyone to share parental responsibility with, their is a child waiting to have a forever home. The hardest jobs give the best reward. Go for it |

I adopted three children from China as a single parent. My extended family was very supportive, and it has been an amazing experience. In a perfect world, all children would have two loving parents; but since the world is far from perfect, having a loving mom (but no dad) is better than growing up in an orphanage.
But you did say one thing in your post that troubles me and makes me question your motives. You mention that you will eventually have "your own" children. Does that mean that when you have biological children your adopted child will be less "your own" than the others? If so, you are setting your adopted child up from some serious heartbreak. You need to give this some serious thought before committing to adoption. |

If you're adopting from foster care, I would say go for it. Make sure, however, you know everything there is to know about the child you're thinking of adopting. The child may have an attachment disorder or he or she may be fine.
I have not adopted, but wanted to be a foster parent. Long story.
Anyway, just make sure you go into this with your eyes open.
If you do adopt, it's for the child's life. I'd hate to see a disrupted adoption, you know?
Talk to your local social services agency. What can they tell you?
