No, there's nothing illegal about that.

Kids much younger than that are on facebook and myspace and there's no laws about who can contact each other that I know of.

I would've loved my Mom to contact me at an earlier age, it would've answered some of the sackful of questions I've been holding onto much sooner

Doubt it.....although the adopter can make an issue out of it.

Hi, EternalSerenity!

I am guessing you are her first mother?

Technically, since adoption renders the biological parents "legal strangers" to their offspring, there is no specific law preventing contact. In the US, we have "freedom of association"; which would support your right to contact (barring any restraining order or other court order demanding otherwise). However, if the child is under 18, the APs do have the right to take out a restraining order if they consider the contact to be "harassment" and can convince a Judge that it is in their best interest to have one. (I would be kind of curious to see how a Judge would handle a case like this, especially with an older child who has the legal right to make their wishes known to the Court. In most states, the age that a child may speak for themselves in Court is age 12.)

Of course, the courteous and probably the best thing would be to contact the APs too and get their support and "blessing"or wait until the child is 18. Not that I need to tell you, but being respectful of others is usually the best way to get respect for yourself and makes the foundations for stronger and more meaningful relationships.

I wish you the very best in contacting your daughter. I hope that you are able to build a happy and healthy relationship with her. I hope you and her APs are able to mutually support one another and come together over/for the daughter you all love.

Nope. Like Indy said, her adoptors may stomp their feet and make a bunch of noise, but there's not a whole lot they can do legally, esp since she's almost 18. They could get a restraining order to block you, but it would make them look like selfish idiots. She's almost 18. Go for it.

In the UK it depends on whether it is a closed or open adoption.

If it's closed then contact shouldn't bemade until the adopted person is 18 but occasionally it happens before then but I've never heard of anybody making a big deal if contact has been made.

Open adoptions - it depends on the agreement but usually it's not a problem.

No, as long as the custodial parent(s) consents to the meeting. Hey, who knows, maybe she wants to meet you, too!

It depends what is in your contract. Contact the adoption agency you worked with.

If you go behind the back of the adoptive mother, and if the adoption is a closed one, then it may well be illegal. You need to talk to the birth mother and get permission.
