Is it normal to have no interest in adopting a child that is the same race as you?

Oh no, i know someone who is thinking about adoption and feels this way. I have no interest what so ever in adopting somebody else's child... My uterus operates just fine

It's abnormal to want someone else's child period.

Yep, I'll admit it, I'm abnormal. :-)

I personally don't think it is normal. When I initially considered adoption I wasn't interested in children of other race (not because I am racist, I was just concerned I wouldn't be able to incorporate the other culture in an educated way), but now I have gone beyond that. I think if you are truly ready for adoption, the race doesn't matter, whether it is your own race or another one.

If the race does matter, the person is doing it for the wrong reasons. Possibly because they thing it is cool cuz Angelina Jolie did, or they think the children are charity cases....

tish
yep. it sounds like someone (the person you referenced) is dealing with either some self-hate..or fetish.

Why do race matter anyway. If you want a child it shouldn't bother you.

I think that there are a lot of issues underneath this question. If you didn't feel funny about it, you wouldn't be asking it as if you're looking for approval. Do you believe that children "not of your race" need "saving" or rescuing or something like that? Or, are you dissatisfied with the "race" that you are and feel that other races have some other qualities that you yourself lack? If either of these, then you should get your own issues dealt with first before adopting, because this all seems rather strange.

Fetish.

Or they want the extra attention that they're sure to receive.

Both reasons are for THEM, of course...

I think its fine it means they are open minded and that is best place for any child to be with people who are open minded and embrace diversity. This is 2008 someone can easily incorporate the child native culture into their family.

People who have a broken uterus or fertility issues are not the only ones who seek to adopt. There are people who adopt because they want to and it has nothing to do with their ability to produce natural children themselves.

I think it's pretty normal. It cuts down on the number of questions the kid is going to get.

It doesn't make you a racist.

not all women who adopt do it because they cant have children.

anyway, if your friend wants to adopt someone of a different race, that is fine with me. there are so many black and brown children who dont get adopted and it would be great if a good family would take them, even if they are of a different race.

I think its abnormal for people that are desperate for a baby to even be picky. Although, I personally think its easier for a child to acclimate in surroundings that are similar and familiar to ones they were born into. It becomes more difficult as they begin to acknowledge they are from a different culture and race despite how much a-mom says I love you.
