Just Wondering....?

We are looking to adopt a Russian baby and are about to have a Home Study for the first time next month, and I was just wondering should I have a baby room set up all ready with crib and toys and diapers and clothes, or should we just have to prove that we have enough room for a baby?? Do we even have to prove that we have enough room? I have no idea how this process works. We are working with an agency, but we haven't been able to go over the basic procedure yet as we are very early in this process. Any advise/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I was also wondering... do we have to have a house?? We live in a very nice two bedroom, two bath townhome with a fenced in back yard and such and I was wondering if that would affect our home study in a negative way... also..

I was wondering about credit history... is that a factor in adoption.

Sorry so many questions.

I am in the adoption process now. They don't expect you to have the babies room ready, just to show you have a room for the child. Every agency or country has their own rules on some things. Like age of adoptive parents, or how long they have been married and credit history. We are adopting thru foster care and credit history and income is of no importance. Just have to show enough to raise a child and you definitely don't have to be rich. We rent a house but they said it didn't matter if it was a house or apartment. Just a livable family environment. And perfection is not necessary.

OK, so......You do not have to have the room set up but you do have to show that the room is appropriate -- clean, etc.

And yo do not have to live in a house -- just a home! That can be an apartment, TH, or house.

Russian regulations can be very strict about closet size, etc., and other unusual requirements.

I am surprised your agency is still taking application for Russia, as those adoptions have come to an almost halt! Try opening up to other countries. And why Russia? Just curious. International adoptions in Russia run 30-45K and you could adopt here in the U.S. through a private agency for less, with more medical info/birthparent info, and may even get to meet and know your child's birthmother! That is a true gift -- to your child. I sincerely hope you do not have the growing "Save a Orphan" syndrome -- where adoptive parents adopt a child from a third world/poor country, so they can tell everyone their child's pitiful story -- and act as if they are rescuing a child, rather than parenting one! Please parents -- do not talk about your child's birth family and environment as it it were yours. It is not -- it is theirs alone. Honor your child by keeping personal information personal! Just some good advice from some one who knows! Good luck with your homestudy!

Hi there : )

I'm sorry I can't give you a definate answer but I know my son's adoptive family did not set up his room unitl after the termination of parental rights hearing when everything was final.

No, you do not have to have everything ready for the baby but the SW will need to see the designated space.

Just remember the SW should have TWO agendas: the first is to ensure the safety of the child you will be adopting and the second is to prepare YOU for what to expect. Ask lots of questions about resources on attachment and bonding and parenting to promote it. This will show the SW that you are not going into adoption blindly and want to be prepared for anything.

You dont have to have the room set up, but I know for my home study I did, but I am at the end of my process. You also do not have to own a house, just show that you will have enough room for the child. It is a long process so be patient and all will go fine! Good luck.

^it's commie you idiot.

i would suggest having a nursery set up. i know some agencies recommend it, esp. if things happen faster than you think. it might also be an added bonus to just show that you are ready to give your little bundle of joy of great home. good luck!

You don't have to set up... just show that you are living in a stable place with enough room for a child. A two bedroom townhouse is good. And yes they totally check your credit score.

Credit history - no problem...you just have to prove you have more income than debt...they just ask questions...you don't have to be specific.

Room for the child. Yes they will make sure that you have enough room for the baby! The state that I live in only require a 5x5 space (if it's a 10x10 room, two children can share it). I would make sure you at least have a crib...doesn't have to be set up...but wait on buy diapers as if it's not a new born, you don't know what size to have on hand. Toys - doesn't really matter as you won't know exactly how old the child / baby will be!

You don't need to have a full nursery yet as you don't even know the age or gender of the child you will adopt. They will want to see you have enough room for a child, that your home is in good repair with no exposed wires, mold or other obvious hazards, that you have smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, etc.

They just want to know it's a safe place for a child to live.

Ours went over our stated financial balance sheet and monthly budget, but did not pull a credit report or score. State requirements, and even agency to agency, differ greatly!

Kim gave excellent advice regarding attachment and bonding issues.
Best of luck.

A home study involves several types of things. We were provided a list of questions that we had to provide "essay" like responses to (such as "How did you and your spouse meet?"; "What did you like about your parents; what did you not like about your parents?).

The home study also included someone coming into our home to make sure that it was "safe" for a child. You didn't have to have everything baby-proofed or baby-ready, but just to show that you didn't live in a house where guns were left out unattended, ceiling falling down, etc.

Everyone panics about the home study, but I think it was one of the easiest parts of the adoption process. :)

Good luck to you.
