Just watching one of those made for TV adoption movies and why are they always...?

About a woman who tries to adopt, but the birth mother is either being awkward or pulls out at the eleventh hour? Plus she is always asking for money, continuously?

Is this not incredibly insulting to surrogate mothers? Will it not put people off going into getting babies from surrogates because they fear they will be heartbroken?

I'm quite sure I couldn't do it, being as how birth is horrendous, but surely, if that's what women want to do, and I commend them, they should not be slurred by TV!!

I do know the difference between surrogacy and adoption, in this case the mother was a surrogate.
However, a lot of these are based on true stories, hence, my question.

Unfortunately, its extremely common for the birth mother to pull out of the adoption and leave the adoptive parents without a child and heartbroken. It happens quite often in private adoptions.
As far as TV shows scaring people from doing surrogacy, I think people in general are afraid because they know that the birth mothers can change their mind at any time during the pregnancy, and are also given a specific amount of time to change their mind after birth. Unfortunately, its a risk most adoptive parents have to take, there is no way to avoid it.

First of all, there's a difference between adoption and surrogacy.

A surrogate becomes pregnant with the express purpose of the child going to a different family. The surrogate might not even be the biological mother, if the eggs were taken from someone else.

A woman considering placing her child for adoption is an entirely different scenario. She feels, for whatever reason, that adoption is the best option for herself and the child. She has every legal and moral right to change her mind, even at the 11th hour, because she legally cannot relinquish the child until after birth.

I think that giving and accepting money for "expenses" between the would-be adoptive parents and the pregnant woman is ethically questionable, at best. It opens the door for fraud as well as creates an environment of the woman "owing" the couple a child because they paid for a few things.

As far as how TV portrays adoption, don't expect it to be any more accurate than how TV portrays any other emotionally charged, complicated and sensitive issue.

Sadly, TV shows and movies about adoption and/or surrogacy typically portray the mothers very negatively.

Because that's how those kinds of movies are always done. They're done exactly the same as romance novels. The writers don't like "clean, uncomplicated" stories. They want to attract the soap opera crowd.

as the others have said, it's just a tv show. Anything for ratings or to get people to watch or buy the movie. My husband, Retired Navy, watches some of the military movies or shows and laughs because of how many untruths there are in some of the events of the movies.

If people are smart, they won't make life decisions based on Made For TV movies.

To make a story interesting, there has to be a balance of good and evil. Since adoptive parents usually hold the purse strings, they often get to play the good guys, while the birth families are often portrayed as scheming or manipulative.

It's not reality, it's just a movie.

60% of adoptions fail. In many cases the mother can't do it and has to back out. It happens. A lot.
