My husband and I are wanting to adopt a toddler...?

I would love to be a mother and I hope someone knows just who could bring us one step closer to our dream.

To begin, I was adopted as a baby and my wife and I adopted two girls (special needs) so hear what I am telling you.

Be very sure this is what you want. There are lots of kids out there who need parents however it can be costly if you go the wrong way.

I would suggest that you start with a local OB-GYN's office. You would be surprised how many doctor's know young girls who have children they are looking to give up for adoption.

Local "faith based" women's counseling centers are also in touch with many young girls who are hunting parents for their children.

Many churches have children's adoption services.

Lastly you can contact your local Children's services. This is the county agencies in charge of kids who need parents.

I know I might get a lot of arguments about what I am going got say but here goes. The question about "nature" verses "nurture" I would tell you from my own experience and that of many others Nature plays the MAJOR role in who and what your children are. You can not run from genes.

In other words, check and VERIFY the child's background before you make a commitment. Know what you are taking on before you proceed. Do not just blindly jump into adoption just because you want children.

You didn't mention if you were interested in domestic or international adoption. Since you've already been given several ideas about domestic adoption I wanted to give you the site that got my husband and I started on our international adoption.

Adopting a toddler is a wonderful idea. We adopted a three year old boy from Guatemala. Toddlers frequently end up growing up in orphanages because they've passed the "cute baby stage" and no one wants them. But, our son has brought joy and laughter and fun into our home. Good luck.

I would suggest contacting a local adoption agency or even your Department of Human Services (Children & Youth Dept). Many times there are children from other countries or in our own US Foster Care program who are of toddler age awaiting adoption.

I would be hesitant to do much "advertising" on the internet as there are tons of people out there who try to scam potential adoptive parents - and no one deserves that type of heartache and abuse! Also many states have their own laws governing how you can search for a child. And I'd hate to see anyone be turned down for adoption simply because the government felt they didn't comply with the rules.

Good luck to you.

You can pay lots of money to an adoption agency to adopt a toddler from another country. They usually do give discounts for older children (not babies) but you still need to shell out a lot of money.

You could also become a foster parent for your state department of children and families. There is no charge to foster. They pay for all the initial training. You can also "filter" the children you would consider fostering to those who have a better than average chance of being put up for adoption.

The down side to fostering is that the foster parent has NO say in the life of the child. The agents will do what they feel is best for the child, with little consideration to what the foster parents think.

My husband and I had gone through the foster training program, went through all the hoops, and even had a little girl placed with us who we expected to stay with us forever. Things didn't turn out that way, and now she is living with another family.

You should google "local -YOUR TOWN- adoption" there should be a lot of pages dedicated to adoption.
Have you looked in to fostering a child? A lot of the time you can get babies/young children and then go on to adopt them.
It's great you want to adopt, there are so many children in the world that need love.
Good luck with your search.

If you are willing to adopt a toddler, that is great.

You could do an international adoption. There are lots of toddlers waiting for homes.

Or you could foster to adopt, which is risky because you could lose the child. If you get licensed by the state as a "foster-to-adopt" home, you can request to do a straight adoption only, but you may wait a really long long time.

Start by shopping around at all the adoption agencies, as well as checking our child welfare services, before you may any decisions.

you could either adopt through the foster system or you could contact a lawyer or agency & see if they can help you out.

Go to http://www.adopuskids.org and look at the photo listings.

You can also go to http://www.heartgallerynm.org/natl.php to check out a Heart Gallery in your area.

Contact an adoption attorney.

You know your question stands out to me. Since I was reading yesterday about how some father couldn't get their baby to stop crying so he wrapped it in a blanket and burnt it. People like you deserve to have children and we are allowing babies to have babies out there. I would look at some Christian Adoption agencies. They work well with helping you out. There is also the option of international adoption which is actually easier and quicker. Good luck. I hope you guys dreams do come true.
