The cost seemed overwhelming to me at first too. There are loans that you can get specifically for adoption. There are adoption grants available as well for those who financially qualify. There is also a tax credit of a little over $10,000 (but that is not until after you have finalized the adoption and it sometimes takes several years to use up the entire amount....it is not just an automatic refund).

Can you borrow money from relatives? Some people choose to take on an extra job for awhile to save up extra money. Is there any expenses you can cut back on that will save you money?

If you're willing to foster, many states will cover the cost of adopting a foster child.

Halo Mom
Try foster care children
Go though the state you live in

Try

I google Foster care adoptions, they may answer some of your questions

It is not expensive to adopt a child from foster care.

Why line the pockets of private adoption agencies anyway - nobody should be making money off the backs of little babes.

Expensive? Yep, but any way you add to your family it is. We went through our church's social servies department, where all adoption fees are on a sliding scale based on income. This was a huge difference! I would adopt with them again in a heartbeat, it was as easy as the process can be with big bills, the unknown, waiting and strangers examining every part of your life.

Good luck!

It does seem expensive but for us it was worth every penny.

You may want to look into foster/adopt programs in your area also if you feel the adoption fees are too much. There are many children currently in foster care that need a permanent home.

Good luck to you.

Go through the state adoption agency. There is usually a documentation fee of about $500 and if you adopt a special needs child (older or some problems) they usually waive that. Good luck.
